Adam,You can create swing playback in 4 ways:
With the Expression Tool.
With the MIDI Tool.
With the Playback Controls window.
With the Tempo Tool.
When beat is a quarter, swing playback on the level of 16ths (= playback with "rolled 16ths") can only be created with the Tempo Tool.
In this example, let's say that you want rolled 16ths with a swing percentage of 200 % (meaning that each stressed 16th will last twice the duration of each unstressed 16ths).
Tempo Tool.
Click the first measure of the region which should play back with rolled 16ths.
Click the button "Set Swing...".
In the Set Swing Ratio dialog box, click the button "Duration...".
In the Set Duration dialog box, click the 16th note.
Click OK to return to the Set Swing Ratio dialog box.
In the Set Swing Ratio dialog box, set the Percent to 200. Click OK.
In the bottom of the Tempo Adjustment dialog box, set the measure region. Click OK.
The next problem is getting the overall tempo you want.
In this example, let's say that you want an overall tempo of 60 beats per minute. To achieve 60 beats per minute, click the first measure of the region which should play back with rolled 16ths. In the Tempo Adjustment dialog box, set the tempo to 45 beats per minute.
In the bottom of the Tempo Adjustment dialog box, set the measure region. Click OK.
Now the stressed 16ths will play back at a tempo of 45 beats per minute, and the unstressed 16ths will play back at a tempo of 90 beats per minute, resulting in an overall tempo of 60 beats per minute.
The general formula:
x = (p + 100)t/2p
where
x is the tempo for the stressed 16ths (45 beats per minute),
t is the overall tempo (60 beats per minute)
p is the swing percentage (200)
