Don't know the answer to the violin playback problem, but to answer the first question, you have to use layers. As I understand it, you've got a chord with notes of two or more different durations and you want to be able to display the chord on one staff line. You'll have to use layers. The way I do it, I enter the "melody" or moving line in the primary layer that I use for the piece (say layer one). I'll enter the remaining notes in layer two. You'll have to enter rests so that the layer 2 notes "line up" on the correct beats, then while you're in layer 2, hide the rests. Using layers, you will end up with two different stems on the two groups of notes, and I think this is correct as it is the way I would write out such a passage. You may have to go into the layer dialog box and "force" layer 1 or 2 to have stems up or down to avoid conflicts.
