1. You don't have to print the PDF files, and then scan them.
2. You can convert the PDF directly to the graphic format needed for the SmartScore OCR software, namely 300 dpi TIFF black-and-white (often called 1/bit or line art).
3. With OCR there will usually be reading errors which you must correct manually.
A better solution is the program PDFtoMusic Pro which reads the music data directly:
PDFtoMusic Pro will work better than SmartScore X Pro and other OCR programs with PDF files printed from notation programs.
This is because PDFtoMusic Pro knows things that an optical scanner cannot know: that noteheads are created with a music font, that staff lines really are drawn as lines, etc.
SmartScore and other optical scanners have to figure out where staff lines and noteheads are from the dots on a page, which is more error-proñe.
The flip side is that PDFtoMusic Pro can't handle optical scans from a scanner at all.
For those you need a program like SmartScore, SharpEye, or Capella-scan.
