Re: Can't change instrument

Having said the thread could be considered closed I thought I'd add this footnote: Having solved the problem in the way outlined above, I found it didn’t automatically translate to the part. When I extracted the part, not only did it not change back from tenor to soprano, but another oddity occurred...

Re: Can't change instrument

Ignore that about NP - I've got rid of it... more or less, though it's still listed in the Human Playback list, which is a bit annoying. Anyway, I tried making the whole part Soprano and it wouldn't do that - at least not by clearing my existing change to tenor by using Change Instrument at that poi...

Re: Can't change instrument

Would you believe it? In all my years of using Finale (too many to count), I have never, ever looked at Edit Part - I'd no idea it was there! I'll try your idea to set it all to soprano, then change the range to tenor, but first I have to solve another problem, about which I'd better start a separat...

Re: Can't change instrument

It seems I triggered a bit of discussion about this in my absence yesterday evening, so thanks, Zuill and Motet, for testing. In a way it's comforting to know it's not just me! It's interesting to hear that you made the change OK in the extracted part, Zuill. I just tried that, to no avail. But what...

Re: Can't change instrument

That's the original file, before I tried reducing it, so my description of where the change should be is the same. But another way of describing it is 5 bars after fig. [17], second stave.

Re: Can't change instrument

Thanks Bill, but your solution didn’t work either - it just didn’t change it at all. I made sure the range I selected went over a couple of system breaks, so I'd see the changed instrument name in the margin, but no deal. So, Zuill, thanks for the offer, and here’s the file [NOT - see below]. Where ...

Can't change instrument

I have a part in my score for Soprano and Tenor sax. It begins on Soprano, then at the appropriate point I used the Change Instrument command to change to Tenor - no problem. But now, further on, I can't make it change back to Soprano - Change Instrument simply doesn't do anything. I'm stuck! Any id...

That's it! Thank you so much, though it seems, as with so many things in Finale, a cockeyed way to go about it!

Multimeasure rest start point edit not sticking

For obscure reasons I sometimes need to edit the start point of my multimeasure rests from the default 1.25 spaces to 5.25. I do this when using the selection tool: select the multimeasure rest in question, right-click, Multimeasure rests -> Edit..., Adjust Start Point. This works fine - looks posit...

Well I've done it, and it took me an entire day of intensive work - I'm half blind now!

This is going to be a feature request (as if it'll do any good...)

Re: Group name positioning per system

With respect, N Grossingink, I don't think you've taken in what my question was. I've already done exactly what you suggest in the way of naming parts and groups. The problem arises when one of a group doubles on a different instrument, eg bass clarinet, cor anglais...

Group name positioning per system

Is there any way to position group names on a per-system basis? I have a group of three clarinets. Most of the time clarinet 3 is on bass, so I position the group name 'Cl.' midway between clarinets 1 and 2, which is fine. But when clarinet 3 switches to regular clarinet I want the group name in the...

Bloody brilliant - why didn’t I think of that? <smacks self on side of head>

Seriously - thank you! Thread closed, as far as I'm concerned.

Group name positioning with imploded staves

First, my preference for staff and group names is to right-align them close to the staff, with the group names just far enough to the left of the staff names to make a single-staff group (eg, Tpt. 1) look right. But, taking the clarinets as an example... My two clarinets' staff names are simply '1' ...

Re: How to assign cresc. from silence with playback?

Thanks for this, but playback is of no concern for me - I use DP for that exclusively. Good to know it can be done though. As for 'there really is no such thing as "beginning from silence"', strictly speaking of course you're quite correct, but all I can add is you haven’t heard my friend playing th...

Re: How to assign cresc. from silence with playback?

In any case, having to do it this way removes all the flexibility of smart shapes - if an Update Layout changes the page breaks I'm stuffed and have to rethink it. Sure, I have all my systems locked now, and I think an Update Layout at this stage is unlikely, but it's the principle that counts! Anyw...

Re: How to assign cresc. from silence with playback?

Ah, ok. He actually said 'hidden dynamics', so I guess you're right - although a hairpin to me is a dynamic marking. Ho hum - back to the Shape Designer, everyone's favourite graphics program (not), to make a couple of broken hairpins. Not a huge job, just tedious, and it would be so much better if ...

Re: How to assign cresc. from silence with playback?

Hmm... hidden dynamics. How do I do that? Using the smart shape tool, if I right-click one part of a hairpin that goes over a page break and uncheck 'Show', the part on the other page is hidden too. I can't find any other way to achieve this by searching the on-line manual. Any clues?

Re: How to assign cresc. from silence with playback?

You can indeed create the {hairpin with a circle} in the Shape Designer, and attach it as an expression. If you leave the option "Allow Horizontal Stretching" selected, then the expression will stretch with the measure. Unfortunately the circle will get stretched, too, if you have drawn the circle ...

Re: Staff names in Finale 2012

In the absence of any response from anyone else, here I am yet again... and it seems I was wrong in one respect. I've just set up a little test score in Finale 2010, and I can’t rename staves individually per system after all, so my apologies there - it does require a staff style, so I must have mis...

Re: Staff names in Finale 2012

...and a follow-up concerning group names. How can I show these or not on a per-system basis? Example: I have three oboes, the third of which doubles on cor anglais. If, say, oboes 1 and 2 are shown in a given system, then yes, I want the group name 'Ob.' and staff names '1' and '2' to be displayed....

Re: Staff names in Finale 2012

Hmm... answering my own question, I see I can do it by means of a staff style applied to the first bar of the system (or indeed all the way across, but there's no point), but this strikes me as a clumsy way to do it, because I'm liable to end up with an awful lot of fiddly staff styles which do noth...
