Why Can't Halfnote and Quarternote Exist on the Same Beat?
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
Hi All,
I'm trying to enter a simple counterpoint idea in Notepad 2011 - regular single piano setup, C major 4/4...
For the first 2 beats of the first measure, I want a C half note for the top voice (octave above middle C), with a G quarter note on the first beat (underneath the C), then an A quarter note on the 2nd beat. Basically a 4th interval becoming a minor 3rd via the movement of the bottom voice upward.
Clear enough?
NotePad won't let me enter the notes. I can enter the C, then switch to quarter note entry, and when I try to place the G underneath, it won't do it. Or if I'm persistent, it'll change the C to a quarter note value...
What am I missing here?
Thanks in advance,
Russ

I suppose that you are trying to enter two simultaneous melodies in the same staff?
Use layers.
Enter the top melody in Layer 1, then switch to Layer 2, and enter the bottom melody in Layer 2.
There are four layers, but you will probably never ever need more than the first two layers.
You can switch layers via the pop up menu at the bottom of the document window (look in the lower left corner of the window).
The notes in Layer 2 will display in red on the computer screen, but don't worry!
The notes will print in black all right.

Russ,
Since you are using NotePad, and you asked that question, it's pretty obvious that you jumped right in, without learning very much about the program. Please take the time to go through the tutorials. Your problem is clearly explained in Tutorial Two>Entering Notes, and it's a basic part of using the program.
You'll find the link in the Help Menu. Running the tutorials now will save you a lot of frustration, later.

Luunikama,
Welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately, you can't hide notes or rests in NotePad. That's one of the (many) limitations of the free program. Any of the other Finale programs - SongWriter, PrintMusic, or the full Finale - can do what you need.

Luunikama,
In NotePad you can move the rest vertically down below the bottom of the page.
In that way the rest will not print, even if it is not hidden, technically speaking.
