Is there some way to make Finale display beamed half-notes to indicate an octave trill as is standard in music notation (and will it play back that way)??

I may be wrong, but I don't think it's possible in Allegro.

In Finale it can be done:

1. Create a tuplet of "2 Sixteenths in the place of 2 Quarters".
Set the tuplet to display "Nothing" for Number and Shape.

2. Replace the closed noteheads with open noteheads.

3. You can use the special tool Beam Extension Tool to extend the 16th beam inwards.

Actually, it's even easier in Finale, since Finale supports plug-ins (Allegro doesn't support plug-ins).

One of the plug-ins in TGTools can do the steps for you: Easy Tremolos

The plug-in can also create hidden playback notes in Layer 4, if you select that option.

However, there is no need to create playback notes if you use Human Playback, since Human Playback understands and interprets tremolo notation.
