Chords with notes of different duration

Hi, I've downloaded the demo of Notepad, but I can't find how to produce a chord of, for example, C as a semibreve and A and F as crochets. How can I show a chord where one note continues sounding after the others have 'finished'. The music is for a group of handbell ringers. Thanks.

Use layers. There are 4 layers available, and you can switch at the bottom left corner of Finale.

Thanks very much, yes that helps. But now I find that if I use more than two layers, the stems get very intrusive, and start to hide some of the other notes. I've tried clicking on the stems as per the instructions, but it didn't seem to work. Is there a way to match the stems with those in other layers?

In the full version of Finale, the only one I use, in the Document Options,->Layers, the global direction of the stems can be specified for each layer (normally, the default setup is OK).
In the Speedy entry tool, you can also do it manually on a note per note basis : select a layer, then position the mouse cursor over a note. Typing letter L will flip the stem.

Thank you so much. I've now got the stems going in the correct direction (although don't seem to be able to do it globally in Notepad).
But now I have the problem of rests being put in each bar in the different layers. I remove them, only to find that they reappear automatically! I understand why, musically, it's doing this. But I must be able to write chords with notes of different values for each of the individual bells. The same would apply to piano music presumably.

As Far As I Know, you can't hide a rest with NotePad.
As a workaround you can displace a rest.
If a rest is moved down below the bottom edge of the page, the rest won't print, even if it isn't actually "hidden".

Thank you. I'll do this. So now I think I can really get started.
Thank you all for your excellent advice.
PS My grand-daughter has just had a go at creating a piece for her clarinet on Notepad and needed no instruction at all!!!
