I have a passage of a descending octave. It is in 4/4 time and the notes are eighth notes. The first note of the measure is an eighth rest. I want the first 4 notes to have stems up and the next four to have stems down. I cannot get the stem of the fifth note to turn down because it is connected by a beam to the fourth note. Help, please. In a harp passage, the direction of the stems can indicate to use two hands when playing the passage.

Is there any reason you wouldn't want to break the beam? If not, select the first note of the second group, and tap the / key. That will break the beam, and you can flip the stems.
