Stem direction

Other than working in layers, is there any way to change the direction of the stems? For example, change all stems that point down to point up?

Not all at once. You can flip them individually by selecting the note, and hitting the L key. If you have a beamed group, all of them will flip together.

After selecting the region (and "select active layer only" if this only concerns a specific layer), try menu Utilities->Stem direction.

michelp,
Since the poster put his question in the PrintMusic section, I assumed that's the program he has. PM doesn't have the option you suggest.

How do you flip a single stem in a beamed group without flipping the whole beamed group together? I need to flip individual stems in beamed groups.

I can't really picture what you want to do. You would have to break the beam, and then reverse the stem.

Unless you want the beam BETWEEN the notes. That's a different case, and PrintMusic can't do it, although the full Finale can.

Can you post a picture of what you want, so I can try to help?

For quicker stem change entry on PM 2011, hyperscribe or manually input your music, then go back to the start where you want your stems flipped, click on the note, click "L" and use the right arrow on your comp. keyboard to go to the next note you want flipped. You don't have to manually change the value of each note. Oh, left arrow on keyboard will go back one note. Thanks everyone for your help, this forum rocks!

I have 4 layers in my documents, and I need to make all stems for Layers 1 and 3 go up and all stems for Layers 2 and 4 go down. How can I do this in Print Music 2014? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

Do you have all four layers in the same staff? Or (as we see quite often) do you have 1 & 2 in one staff, and 3 & 4 in another?

Managed to flip the stem, but do you know how to add my note with other beat below, as in attached picture...
Many thanks.

Use Layers. Put the upper notes in Layer 1 and the lower note in Layer 2.

Yes, you MUST understand layers. They are one of the very basic underpinnings of Finale.

You can look in the quick-start videos, and in the Tutorials.
