Hello,

I was hoping that when I was adding blank staves it would automatically roll over into a second page.

I know how to add another page. How can I get the staves to go onto the second page rather than go below the first page where there is nothing?

Here is a screenshot:

Thanks in advance!Image

I want what's going off of this page to flow onto the next page. :([/img]

We need more info.

What version of Finale are you using?

Your user name and your signature make me suspect that you are working on a piano score.
Is your document a piano score (= 2 staves grouped as a Grand Staff)?

Or is it a multi-staff score for orchestra?

Normally you would add more measures to add more pages.

Are you adding measures or are you adding staves?

Have you Updated Layout?

Just updated my original post with a screen shot so you can see what I am talking about.

Thanks again.

Some vocabulary:

Measures -- you know what they are already.

Staves (plural of the word "staff," by the way) are linear collections of measures, growing to the right as you add measures.

Systems are vertical groups of staves.

An example of a system: Soprano and Alto in Staff 1, Tenor and Bass in Staff 2, Piano right- and left-hand in Staves 3 and 4. A total of 4 staves in one system.

A page may have only one system, such as a full orchestra score.

Looking at your picture, we're back to Peter's question: when you decided to add more music, did you add staves to a system, or measures?

Is there any purpose to a four-staff system?

OK, now I understand.

The screen shot shows a multi-staff score (for orchestra?) with two piano parts at the bottom.
I suppose that the entire page only contains only 1, tall system (with about 12 staves)?

You want the bottom staves to roll over into a second page.

However, what you want, is most non-standard engraving practice.
Staves that belong to the same system (= are playing simultaneously) should all be on the same page.

I also think that most conductors would prefer to have all staves that play simultaneously, on the same page.

I would resize the score to a lower "resizing percentage", to make the tall system fit inside the page.

By The Way (just curious):
What are the instruments in this orchestra?
Is it a 6-part "piano orchestra"?

I guess what I am looking for is one system per line.

I am making up a scales sheet for beginners.

That's not fair! I didn't define "line."

Please, answer the next question in terms of staves and systems. No lines.

Do you want two staves (one grand staff) per system to facilitate a piano fingering chart?

It sound like you just want to add more measures to an existing staff/line/system. You can do this in a number of ways: If Create New Measures is checked in the Simple menu, just keep entering notes. You can right-click in the last measure, and select Add Measures. You can also go to the Edit menu>Add Measures...

When you are adding measures, new pages will be added as needed.

If that's the case, then I suggest that you instead create a standard piano score with only 1 Grand Staff (= 2 staves connected with a curly brace), and add a lot of measures (not staves) to that score.
Finale will automatically add more pages as needed.

I woullllld like to add multiple grand staves. One for each scale.

Is that possible?

Thanks so much for your help.

It would really help us answer questions if you add information such as "what software I am running" to your signature block.

For example, if you are running PrintMusic, you can achieve your goal using the grand staff (as others have suggested) plus the "Fit Measures" tool. You can further scale the whole thing (for beginners' eyes) using the Resize tool.

But that answer may not be the right one if you are using Notepad.

If you're planning on sticking around the forum, you really ought to set up that signature block.

Piano Guy,
Now we're beginning to narrow in. So: You want to each scale exercise on a Grand Staff. Then, you will change the key, or the time, or the exercise notes, and enter the NEXT exercise. Correct?

If that's the case, you only need ONE Grand Staff. As you get to the end of your measures, just add more measures. They will go to the next page by themselves.

If you want each exercise to begin on its own line, you can adjust the number of measures per line with either the Fit Music command, or by clicking in a measure with the selection tool, and using the up or down arrow.

PERFECT. Thank you!

One quick question. How can I get the clefs to appear on every line?

Thanks again!!

From the Finale Knowledge Base:

1. Go to the Document menu.
2. Click on Clefs from the list on the left.
3. Uncheck the box next to the option Display clef only on first staff system.
4. Click Apply, then OK.
