Angled beams

I'm using Songwriter 2012 on Windows 7.

My default setting appears to be Flat beams. I need some angled beams but the manual instructions don't seem to be working, i.e. Ctrl-click the note, then Ctrl-/ (or on another page it says Alt-/).
Typically I have 2 eighth notes (quavers) on B followed by 2 on D.

Once again, any advice would be much appreciated.

Those two notes (B and D) are too close together to show a change. If you try the command with notes of a larger spread, like an octave, you will see a difference.

Even with the full Finale, the BBDD beam remains flat.
