I am extremely new to finale, and I was wondering...How can I insert a rest? If I just put the notes in each measure, the rest shows up at the end, even if that's not where i want it. Is there a menu with lists of rests and a way to insert them in certain spots? I'm so confused.

ALSO, how can I control whether or not the stems connect. Sometimes I don't want them to, and sometimes I do. And also...how can I make them point up or down?

Stems and Rests are confusing!

Thanks for your help everyone!

Joshua

PS: I am using Finale 2007!

1. You enter a rest the same way you enter a note.
Please be more specific.
Give an example of your problem.

What note entry method are you using?

Mouse? - Keyboard?

Simple Entry? - Speedy Entry?

MIDI keyboard? - Computer keyboard?

An example:
With the computer keyboard and Simple Entry (using the Simple Entry caret), specify the note value on the Numeric keypad (7 = whole ; 6 = half ; 5 = quarter ; 4 = 8th ; &c.).
Hit the 0 key to enter a rest of the specified value.
(Hit a letter key to enter a note)

2. You can control how stems connect to noteheads in the the dialog box Stem Connection Editor:
Document Options > Stems > Stem Connections...
In the dialog box Stem Connection Editor you can control the stem-notehead connection very precisely for each notehead character (X-notehead, Diamond notehead, Triangle notehead, &c.).
You control the connection by typing numbers in the text fields.
Hint:
Use something small for Measurement Units, e. g. Points or EVPUs.
In that way the connection numbers are more manageable.
You choose Measurement Units via the Edit menu.

3. The up/down direction of stems is controlled globally in
Document Options > Layers
where you can set stem behaviour for each of the four layers.

4. When there are notes only in one layer in a staff, the up/down direction of stems is controlled separately for each staff in the Staff Attributes of each staff:
Staff Tool.
Double-click the Staff.
In the Staff Attributes, use the pop up menu "Staff:" to control stem direction.
When there are notes only in one layer, the default menu item "Standard 5-line" makes the stem point upward when the note is below the middle line, and point downward when the note is higher.

5. You can flip stems up/down individually with the letter L key.
This hotkey works in both Simple Entry and Speedy Entry.

Thank you for those answers. They are very helpful! Sorry I wasn't more specific, I wasn't really sure how to explain it better. I will try these tips. Thanks again!
It's good to see me, isn't it? No need to respond! That was rhetorical!
