Finale 2012
Windows

I've found parenthesis and a plus symbol in the articulation tool, but what I'd really like to do is replace the note heads with X's them selves. How may one do this? And will it be muted on playback as well?

With the Special Tools Tool's sub-tool Note Shape Tool you can change a notehead.
Tip:
Use the context menu.

You can mute playback of a single note via the (very technical) dialog box Edit Frame:
Speedy Entry Tool.
Hold down Ctrl, and click inside the measure/staff where the note is.
In the dialog box Edit Frame, navigate to the entry, and de-select Playback.

You can also mute a single note and change it to an X-notehead with the JW Change plug-in.

Another way is via the Utilities menu -> Change -> Noteheads. The X is a proposal in the list.
But personally, I am, like miker, a fan of JW Change, also because the audio can easily been muted. Hard to beat it in terms of speed.

Most excellent. I wasn't able to figure out the Speedy Entry muting method, but all the other solution were successful.
Thanks to you all.
