Where can I dictate the number of lines per page for parts? I have a couple of parts that should be printing onto one page - but for some reason are coming up in the edit parts pane with the number of lines cut to only 8 or 9 and continuing the rest onto a separate page. Other parts are printing with up to 12 lines per page. What gives here? It's not in the page layout section - so I'm stumped.

Finale 2014 for Mac

Thanks!

I think that we need to see an actual Finale 2014 document.

This forum does not accept the Finale 2014 .musx file name extension.
But it does accept the file name extensions for compressed files, e. g. the .zip extension.

And the file size must not be more than max. 100 KB.
To reduce the file size you can
- clear the notes. We only need to see the empty measures.
- delete all items in dialog boxes like the Articulation Selection, the Chord Suffix Selection, &c.
- delete all text blocks.
- clear the Lyrics window
- &c. (well, you get the idea)

Ok - Trying 55K PDF files compressed - here's the trombone part on one page and the sax part clipping the number of lines:
07 She's Into Something - trombone - Trombone.zip
(48.95 KiB) Downloaded 221 times
07 She's Into Something - 2 horns - Alto Sax.zip
(49.29 KiB) Downloaded 201 times

I apologize - I may have expressed myself unclearly.

What I meant, was that we need to see an actual Finale 2014 .musx document - in order to find out what is going on.

PDF files do not reveal what is going on “under the hood” in the Finale .musx document.

Wow - what a pain - even empty measures with no text are coming out at 123 KB zipped - so am unable to upload. The zipped file is LARGER than the original - go figure! You can at least see from the pdf's what I am talking about though...

I see also the some of the staves are unevenly spaced - which is weird.

1) I suppose that you have already tried the steps I suggested for reducing the file size:
- clear the notes. We only need to see the empty measures.
- delete all items in dialog boxes like the Articulation Selection, the Chord Suffix Selection,
the Expression Selection, &c.
- delete all text blocks.
- clear the Lyrics window
- &c. (well, you get the idea)

2) Another thing to try is File Maintenance:
Document menu > Data Check > File Maintenance…
It could not hurt to try it - and you might be able to reduce the file size, since File Maintenance removes deleted items from the document.

3) When you tell that “The zipped file is LARGER than the original”, I suspect that you are compressing the .musx document?
No need to do so.
Just change the file name extension from .musx to .zip.
In that way the file will not get larger.

(Actually the .musx file format IS a .zip format - just like the new .docx Word format)

Still unable to reduce the file size below 123KB - even deleting the second page and just creating one page of empty measures with 8 staves on the page. I used the file maintenance to delete all items. Assuming there isn't any way to get the file onto the forum - I am assuming that it SHOULD be condensing the lines into 10 - 12 per page automatically? I do have some parts that are 12 staves per page - others just won't do it. I am also assuming that there is no way to adjust this in the settings? You can see the uneven spacing of the staves in the PDF file.

Anything other ideas? Maybe I can email the original file?

You should be able to dictate the staff spacing in the Staff menu. Remember, when you are dealing with single lines, each staff is also a system. So, system spacing is another way to approach it.

Knightspirit,

I took a look at the two documents you sent me.

1) Some of the systems are not locked. You should probably lock them.

2) You need to understand System Margins.

Tip: Before you proceed it might be a good idea to set Finale’s Measurement Units to Points (instead of the default Inches), since smaller measurement units will make layout calculations easier.

To examine System Margins, switch to the Page Layout Tool.
Margins appear around each system.
Click inside a system’s margins, and go to
Page Layout menu > Systems > Edit Margins…
(or work smarter by using the context menu).

If you examine the systems, one by one, you will see that the different systems have different margins.
There you have the explanation why one part can have more systems per page than the other.

You can change the margins as you like.

If you have any questions, let me know.
