In Speedy, place the mouse cursor on the first rest and type O or H. Now I hope that I understood your question, because this is a rather unusual request.

Hiding the initial quarter rest will also hide the tuplet bracket and tuplet number, as you have found out.Glennart wrote:… In tuplets that begin with rests; is there any way to hide the first rest within the tuplet - without hiding the tuplet bracket and tuplet number?
Instead of the initial rest, enter a note, and use the Special Tools Tool:
- Use the Custom Stem Tool to replace the stem with an empty shape.
- Use the Notehead Position Tool to replace the notehead character with the spacebar character.
Double-click the notehead handle to get to the dialog box Notehead Settings.

I tested and it worked in 2014.5 with O or H, but it doesn't seem to work in 2012 . Finale is full of surprises.Peter Thomsen wrote:Hiding the initial quarter rest will also hide the tuplet bracket and tuplet number, as you have found out.

I tested it, and for me it did not work in 2014.5 with O or H (= the tuplet disappeared).michelp wrote:… I tested and it worked in 2014.5 with O or H …
I wonder why we got different results?
Michel, when you tested, did you only view the tuplet on the computer screen, or did you do more, like e. g.
- Update Layout?
- “Print” to PDF?
- Print on paper?

Just on the screen. None of those 3 actions.Peter Thomsen wrote:Michel, when you tested, did you only view the tuplet on the computer screen, or did you do more, like e. g.

In 2014.5, I entered the triplet via Speedy, opt-3 on the numeric keypad, 4 for quarter notes. I came back to the rest at the beginning of the triplet, and typed O.
I just re-did again. Strange, isn't it ?
I confirm that it doesn't work in 2012, though.
P.S.: 2014d has become unusable with 10.11.6 (entering expressions or articulations cause Finale to quit), so I stopped using it, and withdrew it from my signature.

Thanks for all the replies!
I will try the custom tool solution later.
When using H, the tuplet bracket is initially still visible on screen after hiding the rest, but after deselecting the ”view hidden rests” (View / Show / Hidden notes and rests) the bracket disappears.
The reason I ask is to be able to use the hidden rest as a placeholder for an extra note that is to be moved from the previous bar (in order to beam over the barline to a single sixteenth note in the tuplet after the bar line).

For that task I would use the plug-in.Glennart wrote:… The reason I ask is to be able to use the hidden rest as a placeholder for an extra note that is to be moved from the previous bar (in order to beam over the barline to a single sixteenth note in the tuplet after the bar line).
Just enter the normal tuplets, select both measures, and the plug-in does all the work for you:
Plug-ins menu > Note, Beam, and Rest Editing > Patterson Plug-Ins Lite > Beam Over Barlines > Create
