When using ABCDEFG entry in Simple, if the note just entered in in the wrong octave, I back up and press Shift-up or -down to fix it. But then I must do the same thing to move the cursor to the new octave before entering the following notes. It this just the way it works, or am I missing something? Does one instead learn to anticipate the octave change and move the cursor before entering the note?

Yes, you have to change the octave level before entering the note - if the interval is a fifth or more.
However, many Finale users have simplified the {octave change} keyboard shortcuts, so that the letter Q key moves an octave up, and the letter Z key moves an octave down.

I've been caught by that many times myself. Seems like moving the note should move the cursor. Sometimes Finale's behavior defies logic.
