Latest Finale / Latest Mac OS.
This has got to be a beginner's question.
I'm working on a piano score. I started it about twelve
years ago using whatever version of Finale was then current.
Put it on the shelf when I got to parts that were over my
head Finale-wise.
I now have the latest Finale running on the latest Mac OS
and have acquired Garritan Personal Orchestra 5.
When I look at the Instrument List tab in the Score Manager
window, it says (and I can hear) that it's still using the
standard SmartMusic SoftSynth Grand Piano sound. If I look
at the MIDI/Audio => Sound Map Priority window, GPO5 is
present and listed first.
However, I need a little hand-holding here ... How do I get
it to change the instrument to the Steinway Model D in the
GPO5 library? I've clicked on a bunch of stuff and don't see
it.
I should add that other scores I've produced new since
acquiring GPO5, including one piano score, do have the right
sound assigned. So it's evidently just a matter of updating
from a score originated long ago.
(And yes, I did the switch to .musx files on all my stuff
long ago.)
Thanks.

you have to set the player to "Aria Player", then you can select an instrument from the Garritan library.
you might also want to set the preferences so that it chooses the Aria player/Garritan sounds right off the bat when you start a new file (I'm not sure where that is in the Mac version of Finale)

Also, in the MIDI/Audio menu, select
“Play Finale Through Audio Units”
(not “Play Finale Through MIDI”)

I think I may have gotten it. At least I have GPO sounds going on the score I'm working on started before the existence of Garritan stuff, and I get GPO on a new score. So far so good. (I still don't know much about Aria, though I've seen it and used it directly a couple of times.)
One question remains:
When I immediately go to YouTube and play a video, the sound comes as normally through the external speakers.
Only Finale plays through the computer speakers.
How do I fix that?
Thanks. Making progress.
One question remains:
Got it. However, when I do that, the sound plays through my tinny small computer speakers rather than my much nicer set of external speakers. BTW, these speakers are Bluetooth devices. Quite nice. (Edifier brand, something fairly new I think.)Peter Thomsen wrote:Also, in the MIDI/Audio menu, select

There is such a path in Finale (which I found from the extremely useful Help menus that Finale has -- that guides you right to the exact menu pulldown you need -- and I'm wondering how long that's been a feature; that's cool).zuill wrote:In Windows, it's in the Audio Setup window. However, when I select my Edifier speakers (actually I think they were already selected), and then play a score, the sound still comes through the computer speakers. Rats.
Headphones or earbuds would probably sound better than that, but I want to use my speakers (of course).
Still searching for a solution ...
