Finale 2007, Windows10. Is there a way to enter extra rests etc. into a note-full-measure in layer-1 without having to use layer-2?

As long as Check for Extra Notes is off, you can cram as many notes or rests as you want in a measure.

And if playback is not an issue, you can add artificial notes, anywhere in the stave.

I do have Extra Notes off yet it still reverts to the layers. Maybe I have something else ticked that I shouldn't have?

Can you give us more details of what you are trying to do? Maybe a picture?

I'm not sure how something "reverts to layers."

If you're trying to do what you posted in "what are the rests for?", then you need to use layers.

Instead of using layers you can use the Speedy Entry Tool feature {Voice 1 / Voice 2}.

You can have two voices, V1 and V2, in the same layer.
And you can have two voices in each layer, thus making it possible to notate eight simultaneous rhythms in the same staff.

The “deafult Voice” is V1.
You can launch V2 on any entry in V1.

Example:
In case you need two quarters on a half note, put the Speedy Entry rectangle crosshair on the half note, launch V2, and enter the two quarters.

peelbrow22,

It can be done with layers - as you have found out.

If you need to keep everything in the same layer, use the Speedy Entry feature V1/V2 - as I mentioned in my previous post.

For this example, however, Layers is a superior way to do it. Voices aren't really needed for this, and actually make much more work out of it.

Why do you want to avoid layers?

Because switching the layers back and forth is very tedious. (I think that I must be doing it the hard/long way).

Well, the 2 choices are Layers and Voices. Layers is easier, if that is what you are needing. I try to use the easiest method when possible.

I have my F5 and F6 keys programmed to layers one and two. Certainly easy to switch between them.

I'm on a Mac, but I'm sure you can do something similar on Windows.

If you're switching with the menu, it might be tedious, but there are keyboard shortcuts Shift+Alt+1 for layer 1, Shift+Alt+2 for layer 2, etc. These are shown on the menu.

I suspect you're using mouse entry. If you have the status bar enabled

then at the bottom left of the screen are four buttons for switching layers.

If you're using Speedy entry, the double-quote will cycle through layers, though personally I don't find that very useful.

So it need not be tedious.

The most tedious thing for me with layers is forgetting to switch back to layer 1 and entering a whole bunch of music before realizing I'm in the wrong layer. It's easy enough to fix, but kills my flow.

Working with a lot of guitar and piano music, layers are the way to go.

Finale 25 shows the pointer icon in the current layer's colour, to show you which layer you're using. (In Simple Entry.)
