F27 doesn't display 16ths, staff styles etc.

The place for beginner Finale users. ("How do I...")

Hi all,

Currently climbing up that learning curve ☺

I downloaded the V27 Demo which was 200Mb then activated on purchase.

The program won't display 16th notes (straight or swing) and a lot seems to be missing like staff styles (e.g. slash).

I loaded some libraries of Chord suffixes but have I got the full package, so to speak?

Cheers
M

Something is amiss. I would suggest uninstalling the program, and downloading a fresh installer.

Thanks Mike,

I reinstalled using the Finale bundle installer I used on my other machine, which did display 16ths.

Oddly, it didn't work, but I tracked it down to the midi import 'smallest note' setting.

I'm trying to change a piano staff to slash notation but neither machine displays that option in the Apply Staff Styles dialogue box.

The staff styles are per-document. Are you opening an old document, or did you create a new one in Finale 27? If you by chance did "New Document Without Libraries," there would be no staff styles, but otherwise they should be there. Opening a MIDI file should use the default document.

Try doing File/New/Default Document and see if it has staff styles. If not, then something went wrong with your installation.

Thanks motet,

A new default document does indeed have the staff styles but not when opening a midi file...or at least it didn't until I changed the default template to Finale Jazz, and now it does!

I set import to 8ths and it displays straight and still plays swung, so that's fine, since this piece has no 16ths.

I assume there is a way to get the display resolution changed for different sections?

At least I'm a little further along today...☺

I'm not sure that makes sense, but I'm glad it's working.

What do you mean by "display resolution"?

Swing playback is controlled by a tempo marking.

What I mean is, if I were to import a swung midi piece without quantising, how would I tell Finale to display the notes as straight 8ths and not triplets within the score?

I rarely start with notation, mostly I record in Cakewalk and create midi. However, I will definitely be trying it the other way round at some point.

The JW Meter and Rhythm plug-in has "Remove notated swing."

Thanks motet,

I couldn't find the 'JW Meter and Rhythm' plug-in under JW Tools and read that it might not be included any more?

In theory, I think the MIDI/Audio Quantisation option should work, but I couldn't get it to do anything at all.

Thanks michelp, downloaded and installed.

Unfortunately, the Remove Notated Swing plug-in also removes swing from the underlying midi.

Playing around with Tempo Marks to make it swing again...

OK, I discovered that after changing the Quantisation Settings I have to hit Retranscribe...

That achieves what I want ☺

Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread, I've learned a lot over the past few days and Finale doesn't seem quite so perplexing ☺
