I can't seem to put in slurs. I have done this many times and know how to do it: click the expression tool (mf), make sure slur is selected in smartshape, then double click on the note. But I do that and nothing happens. I made sure that I am in the correct layer. Still nothing at all.

Ideas? Feeling stumped ...

Ok, I figured it out, I think. In the smart shape palette, I had trill selected, instead of slur. So, I switched it to slur and it worked. However, I still don't understand why I didn't at least get a trill. But instead got nothing. ??

Most SmartShapes, including slurs, are applied by double-clicking and dragging. I'm sure you've put in hairpins. The slur (and a couple of others) has the additional shortcut of double-clicking to slur to the next note only, but that makes less sense for hairpins or trills.
