Okay, firstly, I am using Finale 2007 on Windows. I input using mouse and keyboard.

My problem is, inserting 2 different notes in the same measure, same staff, and same time.

The sheet music I have calls for an eight note AND a half note to be input on the same bar, one above the other. Finale won't let me do this. It always changes the note to match the other. If I try to put a half note after the eight, it automatically makes it the eighth, but the music calls for a half. This is sooo difficult to explain.

I hope someone knows that I'm talking about.

Here is an image to show you what I mean:

That's the sheet music. See how the eight AND half are on the same line? Finale won't allow me to do this!

Thanks for your help everyone.

It's good to see me, isn't it? No need to respond! That was rhetorical!

To get you started : in the bottom left corner of the Finale window, a pull down menu allows you to change layers. There are 4 layers, each of them showing its notes in a different color.
Use layer 1 for the top melody, layer 2 for the melody or chords underneath.
If needed, you can hide unnecessary rests that may get created. In Speedy entry, place the cursor over the rest and type letter O or H.
