What do you mean by your words "nothing changes"?
Do you mean that you have toggled "Show Active Layer Only" on, and the notes in the other layers are still visible?
When you have "Show Active Layer Only" toggled on, the notes in the other layers should not be visible.
Or do you mean that nothing gets copied when you - with "Show Active Layer Only" toggled on - try to copy the Layer 4 lyrics?
Lyrics are note attached, not measure attached.
If there are no entries in Layer 4 of the destination region, nothing will get copied to the destination region.

It is actually the other way around. Finale is showing only one layer all the time. I can not view multiple layers at the same time. Also I just tried to print the piano part with multiple layers and it ignored all but layer 1 and the chord changes.

If you want all layers to display, "Show Active Layer Only" should of course be toggled off.

1) To avoid that the notes in the other layers get erased, when you copy/paste between staves, "Show Active Layer Only" should be toggled on.jtabug7 wrote:I have the toggle off but I don't see layer 4, also when I copy and paste between staves it erases info from the other layers on the new staff.
"Show Active Layer Only" also means "Edit Active Layer Only".
2) When "Show Active Layer Only" is on, you can only see one layer all the time.
Only the layer you can see, will get pasted, and the other layers will not be erased/changed.
In order to make Layer 4 (with the lyrics) visible - and copyable - Layer 4 must be the active layer.
3) With the Filter you can control what gets copied/pasted:
Edit menu > Use Filter
and
Edit menu > Edit Filter...
If you want to copy only the lyrics, you should de-select everything except "Lyrics" in the dialog box Edit Filter (and the Filter should be on when you copy/paste).

If the toggle is off, what you are describing is normal in Finale : you copy the complete contents of all the layers of the source staff and paste them into all the layers of the destination staff, thus erasing, as you noticed, the other layers in the destination staff.jtabug7 wrote:I have the toggle off ... also when I copy and paste between staves it erases info from the other layers on the new staff.
The purpose of the toggle "Select active layer only : on" is just the opposite : you select 1 layer for the source, copy, then select 1 layer for the destination, and paste.
In other words, you can copy and paste the contents of just 1 layer.
When you are done, you should set the toggle back to off (which should be its default position).
PS : To change layers before selecting "Show active layer only", go to the bottom left of the Finale window.

You guys all are awesome thank you. Between the collection of information I was able to do What I was looking for. The solution was a combination of layer 4 being hidden, the show active layer being on at the wrong time and off at other times. I think it is straightened out. thank you.

Hello,
It seems like I am having similar problems too. I am trying to add two more voices to one line midway through the song. I could also add snother line, but I only want it to start when the voices come in and not be blank for the entire beginning. But I would prefer just to stack the three voices on top of one another on the same line even though they have different rhythms. I figured out how to add them as seperate layers, but the layers are still in red and green and will not show up when printing. And when I try to copy them to layer 1, it removes all of the info of the actual layer 1. I just cannot seem to figure this out. Help!

If you have lines in red and green, that will be layers two and three. If you want to copy them into a line that has layer one, you need to select Show Active Layer Only, and choose whichever layer you are working on. Then, you can copy a line into a staff, without overwriting what is already there.
Or, you can add the extra staff, but hide it where you don’t want it to show.

Document Menu. Disregard the F7. I have it mapped as a shortcut. Yours won't say that.
