I don't want rests to show in empty measures. I searched the forum and tried a few of the suggestions but they're still there.
What I'm trying to make work is to:
- select staff tool
- select the staves I want to remove the rests from (or just hide them)
- select "edit staff attributes"
- uncheck "items to display - rests"
- click ok
I've tried updating the layout etc. but the rests are still shown. Argh. Ideas what I'm doing wrong?
thanks!

Do you mean the default whole rests? they have to be real whole rests, to hide them. I don't think you can do it globally, but you can select a region that contains the rests, and use the plug-in "Convert to Real Whole Rests" and then the plug-in "Notes and Rests (Hide)"
Also, you can select individual rests, and hit the H key.
Can you be more specific about what you're trying to do?
Also, please add the program you're using to your signature, in the forum Control Panel.

Thanks Miker.
I'm making quick and dirty fake book style lead sheets, but notating the intro or harmonies etc. but not always the entire melody.
These are first drafts so I don't want to notate the entire melody etc. just put parts together for the band and then work up the tunes.
I want to print out the form then just hand write the chords in on the hard copy for rehearsal.
So I want to get rid of all the default rests.
It sounds like your solution above would work but I can't find the plug-ins your referring to. Could you be more specific?

You can do it with the Staff Tool.davelang68 wrote:I don't want rests to show in empty measures. I searched the forum and tried a few of the suggestions but they're still there.

De-select the option "Display Rests in Empty Measures" - either "globally" in the Staff Attributes or "locally" with a staff style.

How can I hide individual rests? Writing drum parts using multiple layers, to avoid clutter I'd like to hide some rests-'H" key does nothing.
I'm using windows xp and finale98- It can be done with finale 98, as I did it years ago, but forgot how-the help file doesn't seem to have it.

Wow - Finale 98!uluulu wrote:How can I hide individual rests? Writing drum parts using multiple layers, to avoid clutter I'd like to hide some rests-'H" key does nothing...
I don't have Finale 98 in my museum anymore, so the following is "from memory":
Are you using the Speedy Entry Tool or the Simple Entry Tool?
In the Speedy Entry Tool you can hide a note or rest with the letter O key.
You must be in the layer where the rest is.

You can do this with Staff Styles easily.
- In Staff Tool/Staff/Define Staff Styles, click the "New" button at the top (otherwise you're just editing the one that's active when you enter the dialog).
Name it something like "Hide Rests Layer One," and set the staff display options accordingly: click on "rests" twice to deselect it.
Assign it a metatool key shortcut if you're going to use it a lot.
