Hi.

I've been using Finale Printmusic for some time but I recently upgraded to the full version (2014) for added functionality.

One of the problems I was hoping to be able to tackle but haven't figured out yet is the following:

I would like to be able to score a single cantor line in a single staff to be answered by a 4 part choir scored in a treble and bass grand staff. The cantor line should line up with the men's line but the area above the cantor line should be blank. The staves should be continuous and connected. This is a pretty typical way of scoring in anglican worship, so I'm sure it can be done but I haven't been able to figure it out

I'm attaching an example.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please be patient in your explanation as I'm pretty new to the full version.

Thanks so much.

Welcome to the forum!

This layout is definitely not a layout for “Finale beginners”.

Your attached graphic is quite blurry - the small text is un-readable.
But take a look at the attached Finale document.
If you do a lot of poking around in my document, you'll learn some things.
It would take me pages of instructions to explain all of the settings I did, but you can figure it out.

1) Page Layout Tool.
Page Layout menu > Avoid Margin Collisions (de-select!)
This step allows for negative values in the system margins.
Now you can position two systems next to each other.

Tips:

a. If you choose to use small Measurement Units in Finale like e. g. Points (or EVPUs), then the system margin values are easier to handle/calculate.

b. Resizing (with the Resize Tool) is easier if you keep it simple, and only use Page Scaling (= setting System Scaling and
Staff Scaling to 100 %).
This means setting the Staff Size to 24 Points.

2) The solution also involves custom staff styles for ‘Stemless Notes’ and ‘Cutaway’.
Staff Tool.
Staff menu > Define Staff Styles…

3) At the end of each system you need to hide cautionary clefs.
This is done with the Measure Tool (go to Measure Attributes).

I hope that this is clear?
If not, ask again.

Thanks so much for your response and the time you took putting that document together.

I think I've got it now.
