Hello - I am working with files that were originally created with Finale 93. They were later reopened and saved in Finale 2008. I am now opening them with v26. All of the versions were opened with Macs.

The last system of music seems to be stuck on a specific page. I tried dragging the system downwards in the Page Layout tool. The system just moved off of the final page. I was able to add an extra page at the end by adding measures and then moving the new measures to a new system on new page. However, I am still unable to move the original system to this new page. I drag it down and it just drags into the margins. In the attached image it appears as if it is moving onto the final page, but it is not in fact doing so. It is just moving off of the page. (Apologies for the low dpi -- I kept receiving an error message that the file was too large.)

There is that icon in the upper left, that was probably created in Finale 93. As far as I can tell, that means that a new staff system is supposed to begin there. But I don't see why that would affect the page that the system appears on. Thank you!

Would moving it result in a blank page? It looks like you've got a page break right before the system you want to move.

Hard to tell from just a screen shot. Can you attach your Finale file?

As Motet said, you’ve got a page break on that system. (That’s the fight angle arrow in the upper left.) Use the Page Layout tool to remove it, and I’ll bet your troubles will be done.

If not, post the file.

Thank you both. I am not able to delete the page break because it is greyed out in the menu, even when I select the system in question. I have attached the file here.

My mistake--the crooked arrow is not a page break, but rather indicates that the measure attribute "begin a new staff system" is checked. But unchecking that won't let you drag your system forward and create a blank page. Apparently Finale won't do that under any circumstances. I'm unclear on why you want to do that, but if you do, use "insert blank page" instead.

Please clarify what you are looking for -- is it a blank page before the final page? The score looks fine to me as it is so I can't imagine why. If you need a blank page, follow Motet's instructions. If something else, circle back with more detail.

I am going to be adding markings and such to page 4, which has two systems on it currently. There isn't enough space on the page for both systems after I do that, so I am going to have just one system on a page for two pages. Therefore there will need to be more pages in the document overall. But the last system will not move. I am also starting at the end with the process of moving systems to later pages, because there are all kinds of text blocks and notes to myself that need to be transferred to the next page. It's a mess, so I want to start at end and work my way forward. Does that make sense?

I had no trouble moving the second system down with the staff tool. It jumped to the next page, and shifted those systems back.

If you use measure-attached text, rather than page-attached, they will stay with you.

Always work front-to back. Any other way invites madness. DAMHIKT

Measure attached text!! I didn't even know about that! I always leave notes to myself and get frustrated when they get moved around and this solves that problem. That should take care of this situation too. I'll see how it goes and let you know. Thank you!

In the file you uploaded, there was only one system on the last page. I don't think you can move it down and wind up with no systems.

Attaching the text boxes to measures instead of pages solved my problems!

Now, just in case anyone is curious, I will say the following.

When I started on page 4 and moved that system down, it *did* make that "dummy" system I put at the end disappear! And that made me remember that that was part of what started this whole thing to begin with. Before adding the dummy system, I did try moving the system on p. 4 down. Yes, the text blocks were aggravating. But my final system of music also disappeared from the end. It was almost as if the file had some sort of preset, fixed number of pages.

Anyhow, like I said -- my problem is solved. Thanks everyone!
