piano reduction
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
Hello guys,
I'm using Finale 2012b on a Mac.
I transcribed a Mozart string quartet into finale, and used the piano reduction plug-in. and its pretty cool, it works great,
now I'm manually fine-tuning it. almost done splitting voices between both hands, but i was wondering if there is a way to do the following:
i have 2 staves with two melodic lines each, written as chords (one stem for both notes). is there a way i can tell finale to take that staff and put the stems of the upper notes up and the stems of the bottom notes down??
also guys, is there a way to copy and paste notes from one layer to another?, for example, i want to copy the viola part and paste into layer 3 in the left hand of the piano staff..
i'm trying to upload a screenshot
thanks guys you rock

To move/copy notes to another layer:aayala1 wrote:…is there a way to copy and paste notes from one layer to another?, for example, i want to copy the viola part and paste into layer 3 in the left hand of the piano staff…
Edit menu > Move/Copy Layers…
To copy only one layer to another staff, without erasing the other layers:
Document menu > Show Active Layer Only
“Show Active Layer Only” also means “Edit Active Layer Only”.
To do so “manually”:aayala1 wrote:…I have 2 staves with two melodic lines each, written as chords (one stem for both notes). is there a way i can tell Finale to take that staff and put the stems of the upper notes up and the stems of the bottom notes down?…
1) Explode the region, to split the chords into two parts, in separate staves.
2) Move the lower part to Layer 2, and copy it into Layer 2 of the Layer 1 staff.
However, you might like to try Jari Williamson’s plug-in JW Staff Polyphony that can do the job for you.
Jari Williamson has written a lot of useful plug-ins.
You can find his plug-ins on his web site:

The full TG Tool has a command to join rests of different layers. One of Jari's plugins (JW Change, maybe) will also do this. Finale 2014 has a setting for this, as well.
And, of course, you can do it manually with the arrow keys.

To add to Mike’s reply:aayala1 wrote:…how do I make Finale give me only one rest when multiple layers have rests?…
1) When you have the document open, you can go to
Document menu > Document Options > Layers
and select the option “Consolidate Rests Across Layers”.
2) You can also move a rest vertically into the staff on a case-by-case basis:
Speedy Entry Tool.
Switch to the layer with the rest, and position the crosshair on the rest.
Hit * to make the rest move inside the staff.

Go to

and select the option “Use Finale’s Page Orientation instead of the Printer’s Page Orientation”.
