I mainly use Finale for scanning in my piano lessons and then playing along with the song using Finale playback. I try to loop the songs, but the loops only work properly when there are no repeats. For example, the attached song plays through correctly the first time through, but on subsequent loops the 1st ending is skipped and only the 2nd ending is played. Is there a way to design the repeats so that the song will play back correctly on every loop?

Here is a way (see the attached document):

Make the first ending play on Pass 1, 3, 5, 7, &c.

Make the second ending play on Pass 2, 4, 6, 8, &c.

Peter,

Thank you for your reply.

Your version looped fine. I don't understand why yours looped correctly and mine did not. The only change I see is in the last repeat. I had selected "Always Jump" and you selected "Play Section 9 times". Why did "Play Section 9 times" work and "always Jump" did not?

<edit>
I tried to edit my version the same as yours and it still did not work correctly, so I am missing something.

You stated:
"Make the first ending play on Pass 1, 3, 5, 7, &c.

Make the second ending play on Pass 2, 4, 6, 8, &c."

How and where did you do that?
<edit>

<edit #2>
Never mind. I found out where you made the edits. I didn't know you could do that.
<edit #2>

Thank You...

How and where did you do that?…
Open my document “ChiapanecasLooped.musx”.
Switch to the Repeat Tool.

To edit the first repeat ending, context-click one of the repeat ending’s handles (e. g. the handle on the ‘1’).
In the context menu, choose “Edit Ending…”.
You get to the dialog box Edit Ending where you can see, what I have done to the first ending, both layout and playback.

To edit the second repeat ending, context-click one of its handles (e. g. the handle on the ‘2’).
In the context menu, choose “Edit Ending…”.
You get to the dialog box Edit Ending where you can see, what I have done to the second ending, both layout and playback.

A context-click is also known as a right-click.
The menu that pops up at the context-click, is called a context menu, since its menu items depend on the context, e. g. in what tool you are.

There are many context menus in Finale - practically all Finale’s tools have context menus.

If you want to be a power user that can work really fast, then you should learn by heart all the shortcuts.
The fastest way (= the power user way) to the dialog box Edit Ending:
Switch to the Repeat Tool, and double-click one of the repeat ending’s handles*).

An ending in Finale has two components:
1) The so called Repeat Ending measure at the (left) beginning of the ending (= bracket beginning and number).
2) The so called Back Ending measure at the (right) end of the ending (= bracket end and
backward repeat bar).

To understand these two components, try an experiment:
Open a new (empty) document.
Select a region of 3 or more measures mid-document.
Switch to the Repeat Tool if you are not there already.
While the measure region is selected, go to
Repeat menu > Create First and Second Ending
Because more than two measures were selected, the two ending components are not next to each other, but rather separated - the bracket is broken in the middle.

*) When the two components are separated, you can clearly see which handles that belong to component 1 (= the Repeat Ending), and which handles that belong to component 2 (= the Back Ending).

Thank you for the informative reply.

I created a new document per your instructions:

"Select a region of 3 or more measures mid-document.
Switch to the Repeat Tool if you are not there already.
While the measure region is selected, go to
Repeat menu > Create First and Second Ending"

I then tried your suggestion:

"If you want to be a power user that can work really fast, then you should learn by heart all the shortcuts.
The fastest way (= the power user way) to the dialog box Edit Ending:
Switch to the Repeat Tool, and double-click one of the repeat ending’s handles*)."

However, when I double click any of the first ending handles, it takes me to the "Repeat Selection" window and not the "Edit Ending" window. I can only get to the "Edit Ending" window by clicking the "Selection Tool", selecting the 1st ending and then right-clicking.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks...
Earl

My first guess is that you do not click precisely on the handle.

At what zoom level are you viewing the Finale document?
You could try a higher zoom level, like e. g. 200 % (look in the View menu).

You also could try bigger handles.
Go to
Preferences - View
and set a bigger size for handles, e. g. 12 Pixels.

Peter,

Is another type of file with a "D.C. al Fine" and a "Fine". How can I loop this and make the loops play correctly?

Thank You...

Take a look at the attached document “Wedding MarchLooped.musx”.

I have added a text repeat for the “loop” effect:
Go To Measure 1

You can examine the text repeat {Go To Measure 1}’s repeat assignment via the context menu - or via double-clicking its repeat handle.

Also, take a look at the repeat assignment for the two other text repeats in this document:
Fine
D.C. al Fine
