I have spent the majority of my spring semester working on my first wind ensemble piece and I was nearing completion on it and only needed to add the last of my expressions to the document. I worked on it during lunch today, saved the file, exited finale and turned off my computer. I came back to it tonight to finish it and i get an error message that says " Cannot delete file "" The system cannot find the path specified". That same message pops up two more times and then it says "Cannot delete folder" and after that "Cannot create file "the file location of my document"". I take it to this forum because the indicator in the top left of all the boxes says Finale, so I assume it is the program and not a windows problem. This does not affect any of my other files. This file has never been entirely sent to any other location, only sent as an attachment a few times weeks back. After the first error, I sent it to my Dropbox to see if a different location would open it but that didn't work. I sent it to friends and they too could not open it with Finale 2014, the same program I used to create it. I have reverted the file to a previous form in a copy, and while it worked, I would prefer not to lose an entire week of work on it. Is there anything i can do?

Is there an auto-save (.asv) or backup (.bak) anywhere on the computer?

Just found the .bak from earlier today. Not everything i did was saved, but enough that this is only a minor set back. Out of curiosity, do you know what caused this problem? A friend of mine has a problem like this with every file he makes so maybe he can fix it?

Hello AltoClariRock, I am having exact same problem.

At the end of your comment you wrote " I have reverted the file to a previous form in a copy, and while it worked,"

Can you explain in details please what you did that worked?

Lost a big file here, kinda desperate...

THank you

I can't say that you will be able to retrieve any lost work, but in my experience, these kind of problems are caused by Finale getting confused by it's processing of .tmp files. Create a unique, separate folder for these .tmp files, point to it in preferences, and clean out the .tmp files often (when Finale is closed).

I suppose I am only speaking from hearing reports from others, as I have never had this problem. One thing I didn't specify: have every version of Finale in a separate folder, as different versions might try to use files from other versions. I also set up my own path for Finale files and .bak and .asv files. I had problems in early days by keeping the folder the installation had selected. I don't trust that part of the installation.

Ron,
you can open .asv(x) and .bak(x) files from within Finale. Just use "File->Open...", navigate to the file, and double click. No need to change the extension.

There are so many options to keep track of. In the lower right corner of the File Open Dialog box there is a drop down for choosing which file types you want to display. This is SOP for the Windows OS. I must have long ago set it to display all readable files and promptly forgot about it. You must have it set to display MUSX files only. Twirl the dropdown to see what other options are available.

Must be a Windows thing. I have never experienced these problems on my Macs.

Different problems? Oh yes...
