One part with two layers turns into two parts

I'm writing a wind ensemble piece that has 2 parts on each system (Horns 1 and 2, Bassoon 1 and 2). But when I extract the parts, they turn into separate parts.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Jon

What, exactly, is the problem/question?

From your description it is not clear?!?

What are you trying to achieve?
How are you trying to do it?
What happens when you do that?
What doesn't happen that you expect to happen?

It's an orchestral piece, with Bassoons 1 and 2 one one page. 1 is in layer 1, 2 is in Layer 2. I've always managed to extract parts as they look in the score. Instead of one Bassoon 1 and 2 part, I get 2- Bassoon 1 and Bassoon 2.

First of all, I wonder whether it is necessary to extract parts?
Finale has had linked parts since Finale 2007.
Do you really need to extract parts?

Second, I think that you should examine the linked parts.

a) You can view/edit the layout in a linked part via
Document menu > Edit Part > …

b) You can examine the linked part definition via
Document menu > Manage Parts…

You probably mean “with Bassoons 1 and 2 on one staff”, right?

If you, in the dialog box Manage Parts, click the button “Edit Part Definition >>”, then the dialog box will expand, and show detailed options.

My guess is that you will find two different linked parts, named “Bassoon 1” and “Bassoon 2”, both using the score staff Bassoons 1 and 2, and both with the option “Specify Voicing” checked.

I would create a new linked part, using the score staff Bassoons 1 and 2, and with the option “Specify Voicing” un-checked.
In the dialog Manage Parts you can delete a part by highlighting it, and clicking “Delete Part”.
