There is a dreadful pitched hissing like white noise when I playback string parts and sometimes flutes. Any ideas how I might rid myself of it? Also score manager has placed an organ part between the viola and cello. In score manager the parts are listed in their correct order but not in the actual score.

Welcome to the forum!

To diagnose the problem I think that we need to examine an actual Finale document.

I suggest that you attach a (small) Finale 2012 .mus sample document here.

This forum does not accept attachments with the Finale file name extension.

Before you can attach a .mus document in this forum, you must compress it, e. g. as a .zip file.
And the file size must not be more than max. 100 KB.

I think I might have upgraded to Finale 2014 at some stage. I shall certainly do as you suggest but in the meantime I have copied and pasted all 226 bars of music into a new file. The cello is now sitting in its proper place as is the organ but the hissing is, if anything, worse. If all else fails would it be a good idea to upgrade to Finale 2014.5? I do intend to purchase the recent Garritan instrumental sounds as well so maybe the hissing will stop then

There are many variables in this.
A few of them:
Windows <-> Mac
MIDI playback <-> VST playback
Hardware configurations

You might get more help if you also ask in the Windows forum on MakeMusic’s web site.
Some of the users there have a lot of experience with playback issues.

Attached are four bars (72.1kb) of the file in question but I think there is sufficient 'hissing' for you. If not I will send you a longer extract. Much editing needs to be done yet.

1) I opened your attached document, and went to the Violin I part:
Document menu > Edit Part > Violin I

Then I clicked the Playback button.
I heard no hissing.

2) Then I went to the Violin II part:
Document menu > Edit Part > Violin II

Same, negative result: no hissing in playback.

3) I tried the same with each string part, and also with each Flute part: no hissing in playback.

4) My negative results make me suspect that the culprit is not in the Finale document, but somewhere else.
Unfprtunately I am on a Mac, and I do not know much about neither Windows nor playback issues in Windows.
