At the end of a piece I am touching up, at the end, the altos and males sing slightly different words than the Soprano. Do I have it correct?

Be prepared for my measure number questions to follow! Thanks

- Tony

I have a strong feeling this one is wrong.

This song is the first one of mine that I transferred from handwritten to Finale a few months ago. I didn't really know how to use the lyrics function (and still have trouble). The lyrics are a mishmash of the lyrics function and the text function. I might just re-do all of the words from scratch

To your first post, it's pretty good, but you need a word extension after 'days' in m. 47, alto. Why did you use a line, rather than a word extension in m. 48, soprano? 'hanukkah' is also missing a hyphen in that measure.

In your second post, yes, I would start over. Using text as lyrics really doesn't work very well, because the music spacing algorithm doesn't come into play, and hyphens don't space. You're missing a lot of hyphens, BTW.

I was going to ask about the hyphens. They are missing throughout the entire piece. Even in the parts where I used the lyrics tool.

Did you put them in with the hyphen key as you entered the lyrics?

Honestly, this was the first piece I did in Finale and had no idea what I was going. I just erased all the lyrics and will start from scratch tomorrow. However, I really don't know how to do different verses. I will have to use the "how to" website thingie very closely.

I only work on songs when I'm at work (lucky me) since I actually don't have a computer at home, so I'll start the lyrics from scratch tomorrow morning.

Ok, so I entered the first verse. All went fine. Then I went to the lyrics window and changed it to verse 2.

When I entered the second verse underneath the first, when it got to the 2nd ending, it did not skip to the second ending.

So any ideas to help me learn?

Mike, appreciate the offer. If it comes to it I might take you up on it.

Lyrics won't follow the endings automatically. Just spacebar over to where they need to go.

If you get a word extension in verse 2 under the first ending, delete it.

I am moving alone quite nicely with my lyrics. It's so much easier now that I sorta understand how to do it!!!

However, this is the tricky part. It's the bridge. The males start with Oo then join the Alto on the word "thin" a measure later. Should I put the "oo" below the staff to make it clear that the boys sing that?

You could. That would keep things consistent. Or (my preference) put the complete bass lyrics below the staff. That way, there is no question.

You shouldn't have a word extension on the oo in m. 27. You only use one when a lyric extends beyond the first note. In the soprano, m. 29, it's correct, because the syllable -in is sung on the dotted half AND the tied eighth.

Thanks Mike. Actually one point I did not know.

My college did not offer score reading or arranging . . . . some BA in music eh?

I finished the song with no hiccups. I will correct the "oo" where it is as you point out!

Thanks
