I'm a student using Finale PrintMusic 2014 and I have a strange issue when saving notation files.

When I try to save any notation file after working on it, I get these three errors:

- Error 0 moving file "[Location]\My file.musx" to "[Location]\My file.bakx"
- Error 32 renaming file "[Location]\~finsave.tmp" to "[Location]\My file.musx" / The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
- Enigma error -200

And sometimes when I try to save or save as, it tells me the error:

- Cannot delete folder "C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Temp\FIN5D2C.tmp"

What does that even mean?!

I don't have a lot of computer knowledge, but from what I understand, I'm not trying to move or rename any files. I downloaded one file I sent to myself from another computer that I worked on with Finale 25, and I wanted to edit it using Finale PM 2014 on my desktop. Does it have some problem editing and saving it in a different version of Finale?

Also, some of my files get deleted when this happens, which is extremely annoying. Would it work to copy and paste everything onto a new template and save that without getting all these errors?

Please use relatively simple terms if you have a miraculous answer... Thanks!

At least on the versions I have, PrintMusic can't open Finale files (I have PM 2011 and Finale 2012c), although Finale can open PM files.

I can export a Finale file to MusicXML then open that in PM, but usually with various glitches.

Luka,
The first thing I would do is download the PM 2014.5 update. I can't think of any reason it wouldn't open a 2015 file, since it was designed for backwards compatibility. If that doesn't help, maybe we can find something in the file.
In order to post a file on this forum, it must be compressed (zipped) and the total size must be under 100KB.

Mike A,
You can't open newer files because your older versions lack that capability. However, F 2014.5 and 15 can both export as 2012 files, so you should be able to open that in your Finale 2012. (But not in PM 2011.)

Yes, you're not alone. I wish I had a dollar for every time someone complained of this on the MakeMusic forum.

I looked at the online PM manual, and I don't see an option for selecting the folder for the tmp files. With PM, it might be hardwired into the program without an option. Am I wrong about this?

Zuill is correct. PM does not have the option to select a Temp Items folder.

Going into the Windows Temp folder and deleting all the Finale tmp files might help. It is easier when they are in their own folder, but without that choice, there might be some benefit by deleting the files. If a current session gets confused by trying to use a file from an earlier version, that can be avoided by deleting those files regularly. Do this when Finale is closed.

They may even be in their own file; just not accessible from the PM preferences.

I guess being able save your files (by setting up your own temp directory) is a feature they figure people will pay more for.
