I've created a batch file to delete .tmp files, including those in the Finale temp files folder. The attached screenshot shows about two-thirds of the entire amount of Finale temp files that I deleted from one session. When I run the batch file, sometimes I delete many files. Sometimes they’re already gone.
Does anyone know in which circumstances Finale does and does not delete its temp files? I cannot identify a pattern to Finale's keeping temp files or deleting them appropriately.

If you do find an answer, please pass it on to MakeMusic, as I am convinced they don't know either.

Good point. I agree. If you do find an answer, please pass it on to MakeMusic, as I am convinced they don't know either.
I've pointed Finale 25's temp folder to an external drive, and this arrangement works fine. My only gripe is that when I start Finale for the first time after a startup or restart, Finale takes a moment longer to load because it's looking for the temp folder location, which it eventually finds. I may experiment later today to see if Finale won't start if the temp file location cannot be found. Or maybe Finale will just revert to the default location.

On Windows there are bugs associated with using the Windows temp directory with Finale, so most of us have a separate temp directory for Finale, which is not automatically cleaned out. I don't know actually that the standard Windows $USER/AppData/Local/Temp directory is cleaned out, either.
It at least used to be that when there were a lot of old temp files around, Finale got itself into trouble, but I don't know if they've fixed that. I've got two cleaup-up scripts, one that deletes the fin*.tmp files and another that cleans out the whole Finale temp directory, including .asv files and crash reports.

Here's my delete.bat file, which removes most of the temp files I accumulate. I use it after I've saved my work. As I mentioned, sometimes my Finale temp folder is empty after a session and there's nothing to delete. At other times, it's LOADED with files--scores of them. I'm curious to know what goes on to make Finale, or Windows, keep the files sometimes and delete them at other times.

I've noticed it makes more temp files when you edit parts. They're just neglecting to delete some of them. Also, if the program crashes, nothing gets deleted. I don't know if Windows can do this, but the way a program should handle temp files is to open them and then immediately mark them for deletion when the file is finally closed. UNIX has been able to do this since 1972, so I guessing Windows can as well.
