abbreviated staff names

Is there a way to keep the top full instrument names but remove the abbreviated names without hiding. I'm sure I did it once...I think.

If I understand the question : in the ScoreManager, leave the abbreviated names empty.

Yes I tried that but it leaves the abbreviated instrument number. If I remove the number in the score manager, it removes it from all the names.

How about a Staff Style that hides staff names? Or, turn off the automatic number and make the number part of the staff name text.

As Far As I Can Tell, both of N Grossingink’s ideas work.
Another way around N Grossingink’s first idea (perhaps simpler):
In the Staff Attributes, de-select the display of Staff Names.
Then use a custom staff style to force the display of Staff Name where needed.

As Ron said, why is everyone making this so complicated?
Rons's solution is the simplest one.

Because this means you cannot use auto-numbering if you don't want abbreviated names, which is a bit poor.
Is there any reason why someone would frequently require numbers without names? If not, then that's a "feature request" right there.

Thanks all. It would be great if "Edit Staff Attributes" had "Staff Abbreviated Name" with a check box like it has for "Staff Name"

I also never use automatic numbering; it's nowhere near flexible enough for my needs. Even if it were, it's never struck me as being that much of a time-saver anyway.

Auto-numbering is the very first thing I turn off with new files.
if I really need various kinds of numbering (like having only "1", or "1 + 2", etc...) then I resort to staff styles.
But for most basic music, simply calling a staff by what I want it, without the "help" of auto--numbering, works perfectly.

Now, I realize that automatic numbering is a no-no.

You can use numbered staves and yet have them not to show up in the score. Just go to the staff name in the Score Manager, edit it so that the text is hidden (via character settings).
Similar can be achieved by hiding the abbr names. Not sure why don't you use that option, anyway they will not get printed out.
