garbage from old piece
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
if I load a piece that it's done, then delete all measures and add new measures (in order to start a new piece based on the old one), I get some garbage from the old piece in the new one, like crescendo/diminuendo marks, chords, etc. Is there a way to purge that data?
thanks

It might depend on how you are doing things. Do you delete all the items before deleting the measures? We might need to examine a file to see what is going on.

I do what you do and get the same problem. I think it's yet another bug. What I do after adding the new empty measures is selected the tiled page view, zoom out as far as I can, then go to the Smart Shape tool, select all, and delete. Depending on how many measures you have, you might have to page through the file a couple of times. I would imagine the same thing would work for the Chord tool.

Try this-
√ Delete all measures except the first
√ Insert an appropriate number of measures before this remaining measure (enough for this project)
√ Navigate to the end of the score and delete the last measure (the original single measure)
This will strip out measures that have attributes changed, such as extra space, break Multimeasure Rest, exclude in measure numbering, etc.
It will also get rid of MIDI Data and entries of all types.

Since I can't seem to duplicate these leftover items, I suppose it is only found under certain conditions. Does anyone have a demo file that I might be able to learn from in this regard?

I couldn't replicated it with a 2014.5-created document, but I could with a 2011-created document. Here is an empty default document created with 2011, nothing else done to it. Open in in 2014.5 and convert it, draw a hairpin in measure 5 or so, delete measures 2 to the end, then add some measures. The hairpin reappears.

I tried this with your file and the hairpin did not reappear. Maybe it's a Windows thing.motet wrote:I couldn't replicated it with a 2014.5-created document, but I could with a 2011-created document. I guess I'm not really understanding the real problem. You are deleting the measures then adding measures back, and the hairpin reappears. I get that behavior too. However, I clear all items from the measures before deleting them, and the hairpin doesn't reappear. Isn't it standard practice to delete all items first before deleting the measures. In fact, why bother to delete the measures if you are just going to clear all items? Then there's no need to delete measures.
I suppose my workflow is quite different in this regard.

Clearing the measures is an extra step, if that works, and shouldn't be necessary. The new piece will have a different number of measures, different bar lines, key signatures, etc. it seems cleaner to just start over (keeping instrumentation, expressions, etc.) you must admit "remembering" the hairpins is unexpected behavior.

It does seem odd. As far as clearing items, ctrl-A and Backspace does it usually for me. Then delete the measures if needed. The ctrl-A backspace takes about 3 seconds, so not a big deal to me.

sorry I missed the action... yes, if you clear all items first the "shapes" won't resurrect. Anyway, the staff/system position is retained, and also the system locks.
What was happening with the chords, was that when I TYPED in chords in one staff, other chords would appear on a different staff. Can't reproduce it now, of course, but I'll keep an eye on it
P.S. as an added bonus, if you have a pickup, it won't select no matter how you'd try, and in consequence it won't delete (because it won't select...) Then, after deleting all measures but the pickup, if you go into the pickup dialog and press Clear pickup, the message is "please select a pickup measure value smaller than the duration of the first full measure". So the solution is to clear the pickup before selecting all measures to delete. I wish I could remember to do this...
thanks

I've started to do that, but it's then a separate thing to be maintained. When you're working on a piece and tweak something you would like preserved, you then need to remember to update the template.
