Hi all,
Trying to open this file that was created circa 2004...I'm currently running 2014 with Windows. I've read that 2014 doesn't play well with older files, so I also tried installing my old version of 2007 & even an ancient version of Notepad. The 2012 version of Notepad gives something about an Enigma error when I try to open it. 2014 & 2007 simply say it's an "invalid file"
No dice. It's attached - can anyone get this to open? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum!
I, too, get an error message when trying to open the file.
I suspect that the file is corrupted.
Do you have a backup copy of the file?

There is indeed a problem with your file. I tried to open it in a various versions (2009, 2012, 2014.5), no success. I saw : Error ID -12.
The file code (visible in TextWrangler for Mac) starts with :
ENIGMA BINARY FILEFinale(R) 2003 Copyright (c) 1987-2002 Coda Music TechnologygFINWIN
By the way, in the manual, I can't find a listing of error codes and their meaning. Where can this information be found ?

Where? A great deal of effort has been spent on making sure that Finale can open legacy documents. There may be a few instances of particular notational elements in very ancient files not being rendered accurately, but if I were going to generalise, I'd go the other way.TMadness1013 wrote:I've read that 2014 doesn't play well with older files
If several versions of Finale are all saying they can't open it, then a corrupt file is more likely than a fault in Finale. Check your backups for alternative versions.

And Finale 2005 can't open it. I dumped the file in hex and compared it with an old file of mine and they look similar, so I'm not 100% convinced the file has been corrupted, but probably. In any case, I think you're out of luck. The thing to try would be Finale 2003, which originally created it, but I'm betting MakeMusic won't help you there, as they claim to not have copies of old versions (!).
I suspect the rumor you heard that Finale 2014 has more trouble with old files is unfounded.

Thank you all for the attempt - unfortunately, no back-ups. This was a file that a colleague created forever ago & sent to me. Looks like he doesn't have the original anymore. Thanks for trying!
