In the attached file I removed automatic music spacing in order to place the whole note D in layer 3 to the left of the 16th note D in layer 2. But in other measures I needed to activate automatic music spacing for other purposes. In doing that, the aforementioned D (layer 3) pops back to the right of the 16th note D in layer 2. How can I prevent that?

One way is to change Document Options to change the setting for Unisons to none. Another way is to uncheck spacing for the given note in the Speedy Edit frame.
It all depends on how you want to do it.

Another way is to turn off AMS after you have the bulk of the music entered. Then, as you do your tweaking, things should stay as they are.
You can always apply AMS to a measure or group of measures manually, with CMD-4 on the Mac, or the Windows equivalent, followed by CMD-U to Update Layout.
Still, as many of us have requested, a "leave it alone, dammit" setting would be nice.

To be pedantic, Cmd-4 applies spacing--it's not "A" (automatic).miker wrote:You can always apply AMS to a measure or group of measures manually, with CMD-4 on the Mac, or the Windows equivalent...
As I'm fond of harping on, turning off Automatic Update Layout is in general a very bad idea; as far as I know won't affect your manual spacing one way or the other, and can get you into trouble.miker wrote:...followed by CMD-U to Update Layout.

Actually, I have taken your advice, and now leave AUL enabled. I still hit it as reflex, after I apply Music Spacing.

I tried setting Unisons to none within AMS. The result is: a quarter note in Layer 1, then a half-note on the same spot in Layer 2. All you see is a quarter note with two stems opposite directions; you don't see that there is a half note under the quarter note. I want to see the two notes but I want them to stay where I position them. Will your 2nd method do that?

Yes. After setting to None, then you need to manually adjust all of your unisons. But then they stay put. As I said, it all depends on what you want. If you don't want them to move, then you have to make a sacrifice somewhere. Did you try my other suggestion?

Am trying it now, but I'm not sure what you mean by "uncheck spacing" for Speedy entry. Where do I find that option?

Go to layer 3, invoke the Speedy Entry tool, click outside the staff, then Command-click in the measure in question to bring up the edit frame. Click Next Entry to select the note with a duration of 4096, and uncheck Spacing.musicus wrote:I'm not sure what you mean by "uncheck spacing" for Speedy entry. Where do I find that option?
Very interesting, I didn't know for that option. I appreciate your post, I am always happy to learn something new!motet wrote:Go to layer 3, invoke the Speedy Entry tool, click outside the staff, then Command-click in the measure in question to bring up the edit frame. In my own copy of Mac Finale, the shortcut to Edit Frame is Option-click.motet wrote:… invoke the Speedy Entry tool, click outside the staff, then Command-click in the measure in question to bring up the edit frame …

I'm obviously a Mac ignoramus and can't remember which of the Mac keys correspond to Windows Alt and Ctrl, so when I was answering the above and realized the O.P. was on a Mac, I grabbed the nearest thing which was a Sibelius manual, which equates Command with Ctrl and Option with Alt. Is Sibelius an outlier, is Finale the outlier, or is it rather arbitrary?Peter Thomsen wrote:In my own copy of Mac Finale, the shortcut to Edit Frame is Option-click.
I was merely elaborating on Zuill's instructions. I thing the O.P. bird has flown, so presumably found some other solution to his or her spacing issue.OCTO wrote:Very interesting, I didn't know for that option. I appreciate your post, I am always happy to learn something new!
