New to the forum, but still hangin' in with 2001!

Is there a way to flip the eyeglasses symbol in the articulations library so that the glasses are looking to the right instead of to the left, or can I copy the symbol and create a graphic that would do so?

Many thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

1) To flip the font character horizontally, use a font editor.
Since you have purchased the font legally (I suppose), editing the font would not be a copyright violation.

2) Instead of using the eyeglasses, consider using another character, e. g. an arrow pointing down to the right.

Actually, I don't think that is correct, Peter, at least not necessarily.

Buying a font only means that you buy a license to use it; it most often does not mean that you have the right to manipulate the content in any way.

At least this is officially the case for the fonts provided with Finale, but you would have to read the license to find out if this is true or not for the font in question.

I have a manipulated copy of the Maestro font where all the glyphs have been flipped horizontally - very useful for creating Bach’s canon layouts.

This {Horizontally Flipped Maestro} was done by Finale user Mark Wibrow.
Mark did not consider it a copyright violation - but perhaps he was wrong.

Yes, there are numerous examples of this kind of alterations over the years.

I remember emailing MM quite a few years ago asking about this, and getting a firm response of prohibition in return.
I know that Adobe as well as most other large font manufacturers practice the same policy.

Then again, there might be a discrepancy between an official policy and what a company will actually maintain. But anyway, you do this at your own risk.

Since the software allows you to make alterations to the fonts with tools provided and without accessing the code, I don't see how it would violate the 4 page EULA (which I have read).

Telling someone how to use the included tools to achieve a desired result? Sure, that's why they are there.

Sharing the results, on the other hand, would likely be a violation. The end user license is pretty clear on this point. Whether MM would make a fuss over something like that or not is irrelevant—written permission would be required. I'm not counting work product such as a score or part. Posting the image separately... don't do that.

I used to license software for a living. Now I license other forms of intellectual property.

I like arrows over eyeglasses, though. Printed eyeglasses give a score a certain amateurish look to the page. My opinion and I'm entitled to it.

Why not just grab some clipart of eyeglasses, and make it into an expression? No font diddling necessary.

Thanks, but how do I import that into Finale as an expression.

And for all of you who so helpfully cautioned us about possible copyright infringement: Might you not be over-thinking this just a bit?

I have no idea if this will work in your 2001 version. You may need to go through the Finale website, and see if you can find any help on creating expressions.

I did a quick search and found these links:

http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode ... /index.htm
http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode ... upport.htm

"Symbola" font appears to have glasses going the desired direction.

I hope that helps.

What tools included with Finale actually alter the font?

OK, I found a png of glasses pointing to the right, I converted it to a wmf so my Finale could access it as a graphic, and I created a shape expression, but I can't get it to center in the graphics window. I think the original png had a transparent background, but when I import it into Finale it seems to create a white background; when I insert it there is a large rectangle of white that covers anything else that might be on the page.

At this point I may have to settle for the glasses that seem to be pointing out what you just missed in the chart after you have passed it!

There's several pairs of glasses in the November font, if you have that, facing both ways. However, to my eye, the glasses facing to the right have some perspective issues.
