Senza misura presentation in Finale
Moderators: Peter Thomsen, miker
I need to use Finale to engrave a piece with senza misura. Please see attachment.
There are some feature that I don't know how to replicate:
1. Eliminate time signature in some staves.
2. Positioning the different parts on their staff as seen in the attachment.
3. Using one long arrow instead of the standard 5-line as seen in the attachment.
4. Enclosing some areas in a measure with a box lines.
5. Eliminate stems of some notes.
6. Display a staff partially the width of the system
There may be more issues I have not noticed yet, so if you find them please enlighten me.
Thanks,
Ruben

Most of these can be achieved with staff styles, but it's kind of a tall order to describe in one post. Perhaps you can explore and then ask questions about what you can't figure out. For the senza misura aspect, you would count of the number of beats (perhaps 14/4 for the example), use that time signature and hide, and achieve vertical alignment by inserting hidden rests. The arrows can be made as smart shapes. I personally don't know how to make the boxes, but I suspect it can be done.

You can also use the text tool. Use an adjustable rectangular enclosure and don't type any text (or type relevant instructions if appropriate). I've used this method in a recent piece of mine. (See the screenshot.)RMK wrote:To make adjustable boxes one needs to use the dreaded shape designer. Make sure you assign the shape to a shortcut key so they remain individually adjustable.
I've just got back printed copies from the publisher. There were complications with the parts specifically because of the reduced sized staves in the score, but having a separate file for the parts got round that. That problem doesn't arise if all staves are the same size.

No, 'standard frame.' You do have to type something into it, but then you can hide the text and keep the frame.motet wrote:… Is this the mysterious "custom frame," or is it something more obvious?

I just type a space (no hiding to do). Make sure you make the Text block attached to the measure, by the way, not the page.

If there is no text in the enclosure, I would make a rectangular shape in the Shape Designer. Any size will do. Enter the shape using a Metatool, so that resizing it will only affect that one shape. Double click the handle and use the handles that appear on all the sides to resize the shape to fit.motet wrote:I thought of that, but didn't see how to make an enclosure. It would be nice if the Smart Shape Tool would have a Rectangle shape, maybe an Circle/Oval Shape as well.
