I'm using a Mac, with Finale 2014.5

Notes aren't always entered when I try to put them on the staff; sometimes can't scroll past the first two pages; if I change something, it doesn't show up until after I have done something else. I started a new version of an unfinished composition, thinking I might do better with a new score, and Finale put the staves in the wrong order.

I was told that I might need to un-install Finale and re-install it. If I do that, how do I save everything securely?

When I clicked Save, I got: While attempting to access "EnigmaTemp602666915" the File Manager reported an error. Finale - Error occurred. ID = -2 and then a message that the file I'm working on can not be saved. This baffles (and terrifies) me. As I work with it, I think maybe that message applies to just this file. I've been copying what I want to keep to a new file. However, the other problems above happened in other scores too.

If all else fails, a re-install is certainly worth a try. I would try resetting preferences first, though.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try them tomorrow'; I need a break now.

The last problem you mention actually sounds very similar to the Windows bug wherein Finale has trouble with a temp file and cannot save, but I don't recall Mac users complaining. On Windows, the solution was to to to the program preferences, "folders" section, and set the temporary file directory to some directory of your own creating rather than the system temp folder. But that wouldn't explain the other problems.

-2 is not a Finale error. It is a generic Mac OS error indicating that it cannot write to a file or directory. It can be anything from the original file being on a read only drive to a corrupt directory or temp files to a mechanical failure of your hard drive. If you imported the files from another Mac, you may not have privileges on your current drive.

This is easy to fix but it depends on what caused the error. Need more info.

Thank you very much, Mike. This is the most specific response I've gotten. It's an original Finale file -- a composition I've been working on for months. I didn't do anything unusual, but in the last few days it's been acting up. It's not a read-only file; other than this issue, my hard drive is working fine. I don't know how to deal with a corrupt directory.

As I said, I've copied the parts I want to keep onto a new document. The original file is still readable, so it's possible for me to start over in the sections that I don't like. If I believed in magic, I'd think that it failed in order to get me to re-write the less successful parts.

Make a copy of the file and place it into a new directory like your Desktop. Work that and see what happens.

I am getting something similar to this the last couple of days with Finale 2014.5. I was using it then I started to get an error message (don't remember what it is now - I stopped getting it.) Now the "popup" window to put in dynamics or articulations has stopped coming up. It looks like and acts like it does but it really doesn't. I have to use Task Manager to close the program. The popups stopped coming up after I restarted my computer and some updates were installed. Finale 2014 doesn't seem to have any problems.

You probably need to trash your Preferences. It's a Windows file called "Finale.ini". Pull it to the desktop so it's not gone forever and restart Finale to recreate a new Preferences file.

See if that works.
