You have Layer 1, high Voice, and Layer 2, low Voice.

If you place a Rest in Layer 1, Finale will place the rest at the top or above the stave. You can move the Rest with the mouse.

There used to be—or maybe it is gone— a Keyboard Short Cut.

If you placed the Insertion Point on the Rest and hit a certain key, the Rest would drop (or rise) to the middle line (whether it be correct placement or not.)

If that shortcut still exists—which key is it?

Thanks ahead of time,

In Speedy, position the mouse cursor on the rest and type the asterisk *. Sometimes, twice if needed.
(P.S.: please add your Finale version and OS version to your signature)

I'm being a bit presumptuous here in second-guessing your reasons for wanting this shortcut, but it may be worth pointing out that in F25 there is an option (under "Document Options > Layers") to "consolidate rests across layers". I don't remember if this existed in F2014. It's a big time-saver for me, especially when writing drum parts.

No big deal, but since you brought it up, you are second-guessing. No prob.

When I create/copy/engrave multi-voiced parts I like to immediately hit * to get a rest center-placed. For me, I find it much faster to then place the rest in its proper place, once all the voices are put in.

Maybe because I copied music for so many years in ink—beginning in 1970—this is a holdover from how it "used to be." My sheet of paper and pen never placed a rest where I did not want it.
