HI,

I have a file I created in finale 2012 and exported to an XML file to be used as an accompaniment for a church choir. The church has finale 2009. When I attempt to import the XML file into the 2009 version, the notes all appear on the screen correctly, but the playback will not work. Is there a setting I need to change? A different way I should have done the export/import?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Since we don't know exactly what you did, it's hard to say how it could have been done differently. How did you export the XML from 2012? Didi you use the builtin engine or the separate Dolet plugin? Let's start with that. Also, we don't know if you used MIDI or Garritan, or something else. There are many questions and the answer is dependent on the answers to those.

Thanks.

I exported the file with the built in engine and I used MIDI.

Try using the newest Dolet plugin to see if the outcome is any better. Also, have the person with Finale 2009 use the same plugin, or the newest version available for 2009, anyway. Also, how the file was originally set up might be at play. We might need to see the file, or at least a screen shot of the Score manager.

Thanks. I'll give that a try.

If all else fails, make a new, empty Finale file and copy the entries from your misbehaving file into it. By entries, I mean notes and rests, articulations, expressions, Smart Shapes, chords - nothing else. Something seems to be broken in your current file and this might help eliminate whatever it is.

I could not come to the conclusion that anything is broken. How one sets up a file in 2012, with the Score manager, may be the key. If one uses blank staves instead of actual instruments, even though it may play back properly, the lack of instrument assignment might be to blame. There may not be anything broken. We need more information. it might be the built in XML plugin which is broken, as that has been a problem over the years. That's why the downloadable version is available.

The latest Dolet 6 plugin adds/increases/tweaks MusicXML functionality in Finale v. 2009–2014.5, versions that will never see another update.

Here's the info screen with links to downloads and instructions for the use.

As Zulli says, we don't know exactly what you are doing. This, however, is where to start.

I can't test 2012 to 2009 on Windows but recently helped someone with 2014.5 to 2011 on a Mac. I got a number of error messages while importing the test file and clicked through them one at a time. When done, the file looked great minus a few 2014 features not supported in 2011. I was ok with that as was the client. It won't do miracles but the results were quite nice.
