Are the 32nd-note beams in the attached example broken correctly? Should the break also go through the 16th-note beams? Should the 32nd-note run be broken at all? The excerpt is common time. I know how to do this in Finale. I'd just like to confirm where, if anywhere, the beams in the run should be broken. Thanks.

I'd say the way you've done it is correct, based on my own work and what I'm required to do by my clients. However Elaine Gould begs to differ. If I read her right, the duration of each group of 4 32nds is an eighth. Consequently, the 16th beam should also be broken, leaving the 8th beam only.

It's on p156 of her book.

I have always done it as Gould recommends.

The main point is to break it up visually, which both do, but I guess there is some logic to Gould's decree.

Gardner Read suggests the same thing as Gould, but I wanted to confirm that for my specific example. Thanks, N, David, and Motet.
