When I need an italicized word in a block of text with regular font, I end up with three text blocks: the first and last part in regular font and the middle part with the italicized word. I then drag the three to line up, zooming in for accuracy. Is there a simpler way of doing this?

it's all written in the text menu, the shortcuts for each type of font are there.
if you need italics just write out your whole text in one single box, then highlight the word you need in italic and as the text menu says, press shift+ctrl+i

If one forgets the shortcuts, it's also easy to use the Text drop-down menu to change the font.
