As it's such a short "window", I thought I would draw people's attention to this offer from MakeMusic:
http://www.finalemusic.com/blog/no-fool ... nale-sale/

Upgrade for $79; Trade up for $99; Purchase for $149!

Offer good till the end of Monday. Getting more people on board with Finale, and getting as much of the existing userbase onto the latest version can only be good for all concerned.

Thanks for drawing our attention to this. I could almost feel this might have been aimed directly at me (see my posts in a couple of other recent threads). I aim to take advantage of this on Monday within the deadline.

BTW, is it best to download separately to two computers, or is it simpler and safer to download to one and then to copy the installer to the other? Or six and half a dozen… ?

I would download separately. No scientific basis; it just seems to me that there is less chance of a problem.

I usually download one full installer to a central "installer" volume, shared to all and sundry. I copy across from there. Updates are usually done separately.

The installer is a .dmg. It's not supposed to make a difference. If only 2 computers, I'd download onto each.

I just upgraded from 2014.5 for $79. I don't use the program much, but also don't want to get too far behind in versions, so......

I'll poke around in there later; at first glance I don't see anything different from earlier versions. I know that's not the case, however.......
Started with Finale in 1997 on a 300 series Macintosh Performa. If only I had stayed current since then!

I'm not sure if you're asking a question, but there are release notes posted on the MakeMusic website outlining new features and improvements.

I would say whether to download 1 or 2 or ... depends on your internet speed. I wouldn't want to do 2 on mine but if you have a good speed then who cares.

I would download the install package, and install it on one machine. If it works fine then I'd copy it over my LAN or a USB stick and install it on the second machine. You don't have to do this in panic mode because once you bought the product you can download it again anytime you wish.

Does it mean there is a totally new version waiting in the wings? Often these sales precede a new version.

From what they say, there will be no totally new version, at least as we know it. They will just keep adding/correcting the current Finale (no year added.)

There must be some way of charging for updates, regardless of whether the name contains the year, no?

Why shouldn't there be a version 26 at some point?

I dunno. Why is this one just Finale, without any number?

When you "upgrade" does the old version remain on your computer and still works? I have currently have 2014.5, but am seriously considering this given the reduced price.

Previous incarnations of Finale such as 2014.5 should remain on your computer and be unaffected by your installing F 25.

BTW I have now bought and downloaded F 25(.3). It's 3.19 GB, which took several hours to download here, so I copied the .dmg to a memory stick for the second computer. I may not actually install/experiment until next week.

You can keep as many old versions on your computer as you like, However, as to the question of whether they work or not, that is another issue. I doubt that Finale 2002 would work on a modern computer--at least not very well.

A member of the old Make Music forum used Finale 2003 on his Windows machine. He probably still does as recent posts still listed this as his setup. He was fairly active on the forum and seemed to be a very competent Finale user. Of course, the key word is Windows. Macintosh is diddly-squat when it comes to backward compatibility.

You've repeated this enough that there must some point you are trying to make.

You are absolutely correct. MM is going to the industry standard for naming. They didn't before but they are now. There it is.

On my Mac, Digital Performer.app is version 9.12; before that, the name was used for 8.07 and 7.24. Microsoft Word.app is either 2008 or 2011 depending on which version I open. Filemaker Pro, likewise, doesn't change its name with the version. The list goes on.

With most apps nowadays, installing the latest version overwrites the last one unless you rename it. So, while Digital Performer.app is version 9.12, the reason that I still have Digital Performer 7.24, Digital Performer 8.07 and Digital Performer 9.02 on my Mac is that I renamed them before installing the next version.

On the current Mac OS, 2011 will not install but, if it was there when you updated tp Sierra, it will work (mostly). I know that Finale 2009 will no longer run and I suspect the same is true for 2010.

OTOH, I have Finale 1998 and 2002 on my dual-boot G4 running OS 9.2 and 10.4.11.

Ahead of schedule, I've now installed F 25(.3) on one computer, plus the pro TGTools and the majority of the 64-bit JW plug-ins. As far as I can tell so far, all is working as it should.

There were the usual mildly time consuming fiddles with preferences, plus turning off the 'out of range notes' irrelevance in View. Also, if anyone can tell me how to reduce the available page sizes to only these four: A4, B4, A3 and custom, I'd be rather pleased.

Good luck with that. Those are in the Apple Page Setup drop-down, not Finale... or is there another just for Finale that I am missing?

I'm so not a fan of the new way to access print options in 25 that, once I got it working, I've paid little attention to the myriad options that don't apply to me (yet?).

That's a function of your printer driver, not Finale. The PPD (PostScript Printer Description) file contains a list of paper sizes that the printer knows about (as well as other parameters such as, duplex, dpi and linescreen).

So you shouldn't see any change between previous versions of Finale and the latest in this regard. You can edit the PPD file, if you want, as it's a text file, though some familiarity with PostScript might be advantageous.
