On the attached file I notice that on playback it starts correctly at quarter = 90, but at meas. 2 it suddenly goes slower. I don't understand what I have done wrong.

Select All, and from the context menu, choose Clear Selected Items... In the next window, select MIDI data.

See if that helps.

If there was MIDI data, that might work, but there isn't.

The problem is that the 90 BPM expression is actually set for 40BPM in the Playback setting. Change that to 90.

I don't get it. In the Playback Controls the tempo is clearly indicating quarter note = 90. Are you
looking at a different window?

Tempo marks can have a speed associated with them. If you want to use the playback controls instead, right-click on the tempo mark, pick Edit Text Expression Definition, go to the Playback tab, and set Type to None.

Perhaps there's a more global way to have the playback controls trump the tempo marks, but I don't know what it is.

musicus,

Three things control the tempo in Finale:

MIDI Tool (= the recorded tempo changes)
Expression Tool (= the expression tempo changes)
Playback Controls

And they work in a hierarchical fashion.

The tempo in the Playback Controls is overridden by an Expression that sets a tempo.
This is overridden by the MIDI Tool, which is at the top of the "Tempo Hierarchy".

Since you have an expression that sets the tempo, the expression overrides the Playback Controls.
You must edit the expression so that
either
- the Tempo expression’s Playback effect sets the tempo to quarter note = 90,
or
- the Tempo expression’s Playback effect is set to None - and then you can control the Tempo via the Playback Controls.

Okay. Instead of fixing the tempo playback in the expression, I just set it to None and now it doesn't change. Either way, having a tempo of 90 set to 40 was the problem.
