I've merged three movements of a piece into one file. I'm creating text expressions for the titles. How do I attach the titles to a measure, not a note, and how do I center them in the score and parts? Odd--I cannot find this explanation anywhere in the user manual.
Do I have this right--Attaching an expression to a note requires the solid pointer arrow for placement, while attaching an expression to a measure requires the outlined arrow--is this correct?

Expressions haven't been measure/note attached for many versions now.
What I do is define the title expression
Some people like to add an extra one-measure system between movements and center the title in that measure, hiding the staff itself. This has the advantage of reserving vertical space.
What I do is define the title expression
- Justification: center
- Horizontal alignment point = left barline
- Additional horizontal offest = (distance between margins / 2 - indent) * 96 EVPU / staff height

Motet: I got this to work, but I didn't quite understand the additional horizontal offset formula, so I centered the titles manually.
Is the formula: distance between margins divided by 2 minus the indent times 96 EVPU divided by staff height??
Please explain--I'd be more comfortable with Finale centering the titles than my manually doing it.
Thanks.

Go to View > Show > Margins. There is a margin that appears down the middle of the page. If you set the expression titles to be center justified, just move the title so the alignment cursor that appears from the expression overlays this mid-page margin.gogreen wrote:Motet: I got this to work, but I didn't quite understand the additional horizontal offset formula, so I centered the titles manually.

Right--that didn't work? 96 EVPU/staff height is to take scaling into account. Make sure you're using the same units for everything (EVPUs or inches).gogreen wrote:Is the formula: distance between margins divided by 2 minus the indent times 96 EVPU divided by staff height??

A general solution for getting the movement titles centered between the page’s left margin and right margin:gogreen wrote:I've merged three movements of a piece into one file. Attach the expression centered between the barlines of a non-displaying measure in its own (1-measure) system between the movements.
To make the measure non-displaying, use a custom staff style.
See the attached document.

Motet, I do remember your post on this in the old Finale forum from, like, 2005? I didn't quite get the formula part. Nevertheless, as I said, problem solved. Thanks!
