Hi all,

I am up to about page 20 of a moderately busy looking choir score, 8 staves, with lyrics under all the notes, of course.

The more I do, the slower Finale seems to be getting. For example, simply highlighting a note causes the spinning beach ball and a 1-2 second delay. Changing tools, same.

I've quit all other apps and rebooted Finale, still slow.

Any suggestions?
PS: Entering the lyrics in last is not an option for me, as I am composing straight into Finale and I need the lyrics to go in as I compose.

Cheers,
Hector.

I forgot to mention: I'm using a iMac with heaps of ram, megahertz, etc, and latest version of Finale.

Restart the computer. It should help for a while. I experienced the same thing in 2014.5, but 25 seems to be a little better.

You could try turning off Smart Hyphens and Smart Word Extensions. You can later turn them back on and update the hyphens and extensions.

I do many pieces of similar size, or larger, and don't see any spinning balls at all, except when Finale is "processing" something like Apply Note Spacing or a Plug-in. I've turned my computer off once this year.
Check Activity Monitor and see what processes are using the most CPU. Or post a document here for us to see if we get the same issue.

What OS version? Always best to say exactly what versions you're using, as people have sometimes been unaware of updates.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I checked my Activity Monitor and noted that Finale was using about 2% of the computer CPU capacity. Nothing else there seemed too worrying.

Further update: from the time I booted up Finale in the morning until lunch time, Finale was acting particularly slow. However, I have just come back from having my lunch and Finale is running really quickly, back to normal.

Motto: If problems persist, go and have some lunch.

Cheers,
Hector.
PS: I will try turning off the auto hyphen and ext. lines when I undertake further research on this issue.
PPS: I am running Sierra 10.12.4.

Do you have browser windows open while you run Finale?

Hi Mike,

Yes, from time to time I have Mail and Safari open and minimised in the dock while using Finale, though lately had only Finale going in the hope that speed would improve. (I don't perceive much of a difference).

Through my ongoing research of the speed issue, I note that everything happens faster if I am working on the final pages of the score, and the further back towards to the beginning I go, the slower everything is. I think this may turn out to be a clue...

I am yet to de-activate the auto hyphen/ext. lines features, as I am currently working near the end of the score and speed is not too bad here...

Hector.

In Terminal, run the following command from time to time. sudo purge
Just copy, paste and Enter. It will ask for your Admin password—type that and Enter. It takes a second to run on my iMac.

All it does is to clear your RAM of memory not being used by a open applications. It's not as good as a reboot and leaving your browser closed but it may tell us something. If it makes a difference at all will tell us something else.
