Another quirk in 2 days!

I opened a score from yesterday, switched to "staff tool" to score some harmony parts, and 2 really heavy lines show up on 2 of my staffs ( out of 3 pages of music)

Switch out of "staff tool"... it goes away.

Back to staff tool, - menu bar - staff menu - Add Blank Staffs...

The same line shows up over the same 2 staffs. The staffs all re-positioned to allow for the new staff over the existing one. The dark line stayed with the effected staffs.

Note: the heavy black line is still over the original staff - the line re positioned with the original staff, new staffs have no lines.

The line looks like you took a heavy sharpie and drew right over the top of the staff.

click out of staff view, the line goes away.

Any ideas?

Lines still there but additional info...

I selected several lines of the score, refit measures ( from 3 to 5.. )

The measures all refit, Staff Tool... line still appears BUT:

The Line is over these specific measures, so when I changed the staff from 3 measures to 5, the Line moved with the effect measures.

Hope this helps.

You might want to attach a file so someone can examine it. Make a copy and delete all measures except those showing the problem.

The heavy lines only show up on the computer screen; they do not print, right?

Take a look in the Staff menu.

Is the option “Show Staff Styles” selected or de-selected?
Is the option “Show Staff Style Names” selected or de-selected?

Show Staff Style selected
Show Staff Names - deselected

I did a system restore - noticed computer hanging after a windows update from last night.

Bold Black Line is now a very faint blue/grey line

Show Staff Style - switch to off... it goes away.
test attached,

thanks for the help

That'll be a Staff Style, then!

It's very easy to press a meta-tool when measures are selected in the Staff Tool and accidentally apply something. In the same way you can switch to the Clef Tool and press C and accidentally change the selected measures to a C clef.

You can Clear Staff Styles with the same tool -- either Staff menu or right-click.

Surprisingly, for most average music (notes, rests, articulations, musical text, lyrics, chords), the Staff Tool is almost never used. You might want to learn a little more about the function of Finale's various tools. That will help you avoid triggering an operation with unforseen consequences.

I was going to comment in a similar way. I think these questions are more for the Beginner's forum.

Definitely study the manual and other available helps.

Surprising enough... Computer was hanging when running Finale and Ableton at the same time ( transcribing a song)

Strange behavior, though it was an update problem, restore was no Help.

The the light went on... I's 94 some degrees out . Typical Maryland -- 2 days of spring between winter and summer and was avoiding running AC full Bore.

I pulled the computer out and removed the side panel, no "visible" dust.

Vacuumed and then blew it out... Visible Dust.

Then fired it back up and clanging.. sata cable barely touching one of the big fans on the graphics card.

re-positioned the cable ( which I assume may have been resting on the fan all along - in winter, one fan might have cut it, but when it warmed up.. ?? )
... And it's cooler in the room

Problems solved - including the grey line.

Thanks for the insight on the other possibilities. NOTED!

Thanks again

Are you suggesting that overheating was causing Staff Styles to appear in your score? That's just not possible.

Also, vacuuming electronics is generally inadvisable, as the static charges from the air movement can fry components.

Heat is the only variable that remains. I'm totally stumped because the problem does not exist now. I even loaded a previous version of my work and the line appeared ( where no line existed before ).

Anyway, No lines... no mouse lock up ...

Thank Heavens!
