I am writing in 3/4 time. I have an eighth rest and 5 eighth notes. I want my beams to go 3 then 2. I cannot make them do it! This pattern is the same for every measure throughout the piece.

Assuming you have Finale and not something like Songwriter, either use a time signature of 1+3+2 over 8 (NOT 1/8 + 3/8 + 2/8--instead, put 1+3+2 in the same box) but displayed as 3/4, or else write everything in 3/4 and then use "Utilities/Rebeam/Rebeam to time signature and pick the composite time signature.

Well, rats, rebeam to time signature should work and it doesn't. Maybe Zuill or Peter can help.

Meanwhile, simply rebeaming to 1/2 will work, as will starting out with the above composite time signature above displayed as 3/4.

I could be wrong, but I've never seen beaming such as you describe. Beaming 1 + 2 + 2 shows the clear subdivision of the 3 beats.

I am not sure which Peter you mean, but it works for me (sorry!)

motet, can you provide exact steps to reproduce the issue where it doesn’t work?

I think here's what happened:
  • Open a default document.
  • Set time signature to 3/4.
  • Enter an eighth rest and 5 eighth notes.
  • Use Rebeam to time signature with 1+3+2 eighth notes.
This works. But now, open another default document and repeat. This time, when you get to Rebeam to time signature, it's mysteriously set to 3/8 and changing it to 1+3+2 gives incorrect results.

I can reproduce that bug.

Looks like the Rebeam utility somehow gets “stuck’ after the first rebeaming.
